RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Drummers?

OK, so i've got no real musical talent or experience, but I'm interested in possibly learning how to play a drum set. Don't know where that idea came from, but it seems like a cool thing to do anyhow.

My question is, are there any drummers here? I'd like to know whether playing the drums is mostly natural skill or mostly learned abilities. Can a person with very little musical talent learn to drum (with a lot of practice of course)? Are there any skills you just have to have or can you just learn as you go?

Yeah, this was kind of random, but hey, what's the harm in asking?

Re: Drummers?

well. I started the drum a couple of months back. When you start an instrument, you don't need any music knowledge because you learn that along the way.

And for drums, you dont really need to learnt actual music notes and stuff, cause drums have their own thing going on. But i say that it is ALWAYS good to pick up any instrument, and it is definately worth it, and very fun.

GO FOR IT DUUUUUUDE.

Whose your favorite drummer?

Re: Drummers?

No, but some of my friends are. It's an instrument that I wouldn't mind taking up, though I personally prefer playing bass, keyboard, & guitar.

Re: Drummers?

I play drums. I think you need to have rhythm and coordination, but other than that you just need to practice.

Re: Drummers?

First instrument I wanted to play was the drums. I later found I just wanted to hit shit with sticks really hard Rolleyes

Anyways, I'm doing guitar now, and I'm waaaaay better at it than drums.

If you are good at multitasking and can keep a decent rhythm, you should have no problem getting good with drums. Even if you aren't so good at those things, you will be able to learn and get better; as is the case with almost everything.

I personally can't multitask on a drum kit for some reason. It's like I have a beat in my head that my hands try and follow no matter what I want to play.

Truth is, I have zero rhythm, coordination, or ability to multitask. Rolleyes But hopefully I can learn those skills with practice....i'm gonna give it a try, anyways.

Re: Drummers?

It really depends on what you want to do. If you wanna play rock n roll, its mostly 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and, and the occasionally beat on the toms as fast as you can drum fill.

Death metal is often seen as the hardest but its really just more subdivisions at faster tempos. As long as you practice your double bass speed, you're good.

If you want to play jazz, then it's just a flexible rhythm sorta in sync with the bass player. Popular is the tripelet with a bass drum counting out the number of beats in the time signature. So its like this: tee tee tee, tee tee tee, etc. with a bass drum goin 1 2 3 4.

If you're aiming for playing really fucking complicated shit, then you'll need to study drumming very seriously, and you'll want to learn through Dennis Chambers and Bill Bruford.
