RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

D+ in math

If I don't bring it up to at least a B by the end of the year, my mom's going to kill me.
I've been trying everything I can to bring it up, but no one seems to understand that just because I get a D+ in 8th grade won't mean I won't get into a good college. And my high school math class (adv. algebra 2) has already been chosen; it can't be changed. Nobody seems to understand that I don't want to major in math, and all I want to do is learn what I want to learn (photography, architecture, 3d modeling, stuff like that).
There's two tests that I will have to take that could have a chance of raising it: my chapter 12 final test (which I have already taken; I have a good feeling about it) and the math finals at the end of the year. However, I don't think I will do as good as I hope I can on the latter.

What should I do?

8th grade, huh?

Damn, nobody's gonna care about that in a year or 2... as long as you pass. Colleges only care about your last year (or second last year, depending when you apply).

I'm guessing your mom won't actually literally kill you though... right? Razz

Re: D+ in math

You're gonna need to know a good bit of math if you want to do architecture or 3d modeling.

As far as your grade right now goes, all I can recommend is study like hell. As both me and a friend of mine can attest, miracles do happen, but you gotta make them happen. Also, try to catch your mom in a good mood and talk down whatever punishment she's threatening. If you get your grade up to a c or c+ instead of a b,contextualize it by emphasizing the improvement you made over such a short period.

Also, I'm not so sure about the college thing that Soul Riser talked about. I mean, depending on where you want to get in, it may or may not be true, but I would recommend doing well even your freshman year just to demonstrate a certain level of consistency to whatever college you apply to. But that's still pretty far off for you.

I've never heard of any college or university even asking to see any grades apart from the last year before you apply there. But maybe there are some exceptions. Shrug

US universities generally require a complete high school (so 8th grade doesn't count) transcript.

But hey, I don't see any reason why I'd study in the US. Czech universities only require your school leaving exam (you do the exam in your last year of high school) grades, and some universities don't even care about those. Admission is mostly based on the entrance exams to the university. I think Charles University gives bonus points for your school leaving exam grades, it's optional to submit them.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

I think you've just earned the jealousy of everyone here whose parents DO care about grades.

In my extremly mosre fucked up than normal mind I say fuck it. Ok, Ds suck. But seriously year 8, woooo life changing experience. The point of year 8 is to give us something do to before year 10. I think you should buy some leckieleckie books and make yourself smart in a sudden cram revise year 10 session.

Oh yes it can. There are always seats open in lower level classes. No one with a D+ math average is going to be allowed into an advanced algebra class. Few would be allowed in with a C.

Also, architecture and 3D design are both math intensive subjects. Architechs in particular normally have to take a shit load of math, physics and engineering courses in college. 3D designers need a solid foundation in math, physics, computer programing and engineering to do their jobs well.

I'm not trying to be a bitch about this. If you hadn't mentioned your career goals, I would've told you a D+ was perfectly acceptable. But if those are really things you want to do in your life, you need to disuade yourself from thinking "It doesn't matter right now." 'Cause it really does.

Re: D+ in math

"Studying" in the old sense won't help you imo. If you want that D+ to a B, go find online tutorials and stuff about the topics that will be on your final. Then figure out how the equation works. Give yourself problems. Do 'em backwards to make sure they're correct. If you really want high marks, you should be do a problem in about 1 minute max. Depends on what it is (and how fast you write).

Re: D+ in math

Well, first off, I'd say that you should at least try to get a B or above, if you aren't already. Put in a lot of effort, & your grade will likely change for the better. If not, and it only gets up to, say, a C, then you can try to convince your mom that you were actually studying & working diligently on your grade.

Secondly, there's no way that having a D+ would seriously impact your chances for college. If you can't qualify for an advanced math course like Calculus, that's one thing, but it's not a slippery slope in regards to classes. You could get into a decent class, such as Algebra A, and then work your way up from there.

Heh. This is what is good about college. I plan to take my Junior and Senior year pretty seriously.

I'm the same way with math. I'm pretty bad at it (English and History being my strong points in school), and in middle school I would get told that I was doing bad, which was when I tried to do good, and so I just gave up. I'm in my Sophomore year of high school now and I just don't even care about Math anymore. My whole life I've been discouraged and unmotivated about.

Bringing grades up really easy imo. In mid-grading period, I'll be failing, and (usually) I can bring it up to a B, sometimes a high C. I've yet to fail anything; this method has worked for two years so far.

People don't realize that as long as your GPA is not crazy-bad you will still get into a decent college. My dad was in his bottom quarter and has gone to a good college. Just don't worry about it. If you stress, it'll only get worse, I promise. Take one day at a time and you'll be fine.
