RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

RE: If the choice were given to be a wise man or a rich man...

I believe that wisdom can be a curse. Nevermind the "ignorance is bliss" philosophy I picked up as a freshman; a wise man can be more aware of his surroundings, and of how humanity will, ievitably, be fucked. I'd rather be rich, ignorant, and happy than common, aware, and depressed.
Besides, the phrase "money doesn't buy happiness" isn't true; money buys what you need to be happy.

I hate questions like these because they always seem like stupid, false choices.

That said, I'd be rich just for the women.

As a wise man you will also realize the potential humans have for greatness. I am pretty wise, not rich, and overall very happy.

Still saying wealth.
Wisdom so far brings suffering.

RE: If the choice were given to be a wise man or a rich man...

I would do the wise thing, and choose neither. I would choose wealth. Richness is valued in money, where as wealth is valued in many forms, including happiness and possessions. Wealth essentially chooses both. I have two other points, the rich man would want to be wise, where as the wise man would realise he would rather be rich. Also, it's simple to be wise. Think of something really stupid to say, then don't say it.

My past post on this topic is still pretty much spot on:

Didn't quite think that one through there. Why would a rich man write books to become rich, and not make a business that sells diamond air, and sell that!

I would chose to be rich and become wise in all my spare time.
Or I could use my vast wisdom to gain money.
This is to hard for me to answer.

Choose insanity. You wouldn't care about not choosing the other option.

Wisdom, duh, with Wisdom i will make more than i would have being "rich" because JUST being rich entails not being able to sustain your wealth.

If the choice were given to be a wise man or a rich man...

If I were a rich man, I'd probably ignorant about the world's problems and other surrounding me.

If I were a wise man, I'd have understanding and knowledge, but I can't get up the social ladder.

Personally, I would rather be wise. If this means I can be middle class or at least have a decent life, I'd take wisdom any day of the week. Sure, it's definitely true that the saying "money doesn't buy happiness" is pure bull, since those that have nothing probably aren't happy themselves, but I've met a lot of upper class people who are snobby and ignorant as hell. I'd rather not be like them.
