RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Heelys

Any of you have Heelys?

I do. Biggrin

They are pretty awesome. I saw little kids with them starting a year or two ago. I wanted a pair. Finally, I found an adult size online. They were a lot harder to use at first than I expected, but I became proficient pretty quickly.

I get a lot of weird looks when I use them, though. Laugh

i wouldnt buy them, maybe its just the fact that a 16 year old would look rediculous in a pair of those XD//

Re: Heelys

I'm considerably older than 16. I don't care if I look ridiculous, they're a lot of fun.

On the right surfaces I can get places faster, too.

I think they only look weird to people because they aren't used to seeing them... people tend to be a bit freaked out by the unusual. Do rollerblades look ridiculous on people?

I used to have them, but I grew out of them and I couldn't be bothered getting new ones.

Re: Heelys

I just had an idea, what if these shoes were motorised? You could probably freak people out by walking without moving your legs and if you wear something like a trenchcoat...

My old school banned them because too many people were marking up the floors.

Anybody caught wearing a pair had to go clean the halls.

Re: Heelys

They're incredibly annoying. I especially hate it when I'm perusing something at a store & some little maniac goes screeching by on one of those things, leaving me with little time to get out of the way.

Christ, I've GOTTA try that. A long trenchcoat, a fedora, and some sunglasses.

Re: Heelys

Hehe those are a bit of a cult at my school; lots of people have them. They're against the rules, but most of the admins are pretty cool with it. The other day I was walking with my friend who was wearing these, and she rolled right past the principal. I was prepared for him to yell at her for it, but he just smiled and said, "those are fun!"

I've tried them a few times, but they're really really hard to balance on, and I can never figure out how to keep them going =/ I really like the idea of motorizing these. I'd never have to walk again =)

Re: Heelys

would it be cool if they could go sideways aswell?
So im just picturing wearing a trench coat, fedora, and sunnies, and going sideways on the footpath in the city, or trying to go through small tight spaces

Re: Heelys

Motors would be nice... on sidewalks and concrete there's too much friction to glide for long if it's flat. The ideal surfaces are mostly stores, terminals, floors, tile... in establishments that tend to ban them.

It took me at least a few hours of struggling with them over my first week with them, to get over my feeling of "wow I can't believe I bought these, I'm incapable of balancing on them!"

Like with anything, a little responsibility makes a big difference. I always avoid heelying right near people or going fast if there's any way someone could get in my way.

Shame that none of the donkeys that operate those in the store have any damned responsiblity. Lack of consideration is all it is. Though in all fairness, I can't fully blame the kids for it. I also blame the parents for buying the shoes, not telling them about common courtesy, & not doing a single frigging thing when one of their precious little monsters nearly knocks over an innocent bystander.
