RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

discovery education

Tired of the shit they taught in school I went to presue things I was interested in myself. so I got on discovery education (they stream a fucking million videos on everything) but then I need a teacher access. why the hell do I have to be a teacher to acsess educational videos! So does anyone know sites that dont require disrict access? because its like 1000's of online resources are locked up.

Had to move on. Account is dead.

Re: discovery education

You're a self-teacher. Do they check if you're a regular teacher?

I made a 30-day trial account by just entering N/A for my school, I guess you could put your address.

The trial only includes segments of the video.

Anyway, full access is a commercial product that probably costs a lot. :(

I wonder if there is another company that makes videos like that. If not, we should Biggrin

Re: discovery education

Check out http://www.cosmeo.com/explorecosmeo.cfm/

I think they offer the same discovery videos for $9.95/month. That's a decent price for access to 30,000 video segments, if they're any good.

EDIT: http://www.learner.org/resources/browse.html offers a bunch of free videos, just need to register. A lot of them are pretty old though.

Not to mention good-old-fashioned Youtube and Google video, if you look hard enough.

Really? Would you like to prove to me that every single video there is just mindless drivel and not, in fact, used in some redeemable way under many circumstances?

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Don't worry, there's no porn there, I checked.

Re: discovery education

Discovery Learning is one of those teaching strategies they teach to teachers. The idea is to use the natural environment of life to help a student realize concepts that are in the curriculum. It works great in Alaska because we have a lot of nature all around us and that can be tied into science, for instance.

I think the reason the web sites are limited is because they want adults who have a visible means of support instead of giving it away randomly.

If youtube had porn it might actually be watchable.

What you mean, is fake porn. I.e, videos claiming to be sexual, but actually are not.

Now those are fucking terrible.

Most cash registers are computer operated, they don't require much if any math skills. I know, because I get stares from co-workers every time I announce change faster than the computer.

...Customers like it, but co-workers think I'm a show off.

There's a price for *NOT* learning, so why shouldn't there be a price for learning?

sorry for the off-topic post, but...

akdonn: could you post your images to a site like postimage.org and link to them from your messages -- instead of attaching them directly to posts? SoulRiser posted a request about this...
