RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
I was horrified today when my C drive started ticking, followed by a pretty blue screen. I was certain it's toast, but after some messing with cables and whatnot it suddenly boots normally.
Either it's merely overheating, or it's one lucky bastard that survived a head failure.
Problem, officer?

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
Aw fuck. I heard some ticking again, meaning there is still stuff causing the head to go "WTF" and reset its position in an attempt to read the bad sectors again.
Problem, officer?

Your harddisks fucked. Buy a new one.
I'm building a new PC soon. Dunno if I wanna try AMD again with one of their X6s or go with Intel's i7s or i5s...

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
Well, isn't basically anything that has a processor capable of being a *nix machine? I mean, look at linux, it's been ported to anything and everything.
Still, I like Windows. Never had too many issues with it.

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
The screen on my damn laptop broke, and I had to send it in for repairs. The warranty I had on it granted me a loaner while my original laptop would be under repair at Fry's Electronics for about a month or more. At first I was thinking I was going to receive a shitty, five year old Dell laptop based on what I've heard about the store, but they ended up bringing out a brand-new system for me to use. It looked like it had just about everything I needed, hell it even had a Blu-Ray player.
I was eager to get all my crap onto it, I was thinking: "Oh, well since it has 4 GB of RAM, a high end Core i5 CPU, and a Blu-Ray player, then it must have at least a basic dedicated video card from Nvidia or ATI, right?"
I open up device manager, go to the video devices to check, and to my horror I see the thing I dreaded the most...
Integrated Intel HD Graphics.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
It pisses me off how manufactures will have impressive specs: high RAM, good CPU, a ton of hard drive space...but then they give you Intel's crappy integrated video card that struggles running five year old games on anything higher than medium settings, or 3d programs like Maya and 3ds Max.
Oh well, still better than what I was expecting.

And of course they don't make it obvious, it's next to impossible to find what video card a laptop has in a store.

Actually, after testing it out, it seems the GPU is actually decently better than intel's 9xx series that the site mentions. The "HD" series integrated into the Corei3, i5, and i7 laptops is better than ATI and Nvidia's own integrated cards, and some of their lowest end dedicated cards. Tested out Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock, COD ran nearly maxed out (shadows disabled) at the screen's native resolution with a solid 28fps, up to 60fps inside buildings. Bioshock ran with DX10 textures, shadows disabled, real-time reflections disabled, and a screen resolution of 1280x728 at about 20fps, choppy, but still playable.

RE: The PC/Tech Thread
I have my Core i7 920 with stock cooler, for over a year now..and my temps are on avg 55 and sometimes 60 degrees celcius on IDLE. My friends letting me buy his old Corsair H50 watercooler and was wondering if it's worth it...And I cleaned my PC from all dust
