RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
checks the filesystem (harddrive) for errors.
In windows: chkdsk
In Linux: fsck
If that's what your talking about.
Sometimes computers will do that after being improperly shutdown or damaged.
I do it every once in a while just to make sure everything is running smoothly

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
In windows:
start -> accessories -> Right click cmd or command prompt and click run as administrator.
In the black cmd or command prompt screen type -> chkdsk and hit enter.
It might ask you to schedule one. If you schedule a chkdsk it will do it upon restarting the computer.
In linux.
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal

Building up a budget PC I might sell or use for overclocking.
Athlon II X250 3.0ghz
2GB DDR2 RAM
Gigabyte MA74GM mATX motherboard
8800GTS 640mb
500W APEX Power Supply
Windows 7 x64
With reused parts, it only cost me a little under $300

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
MY FUCKING EPIC LAPTOP FROM MY DADDY!!11!11
HPee dv6605us Pashitton
Athlon 64 X2 (decent enough...)
Less than 1 GB of ram (990mb) because of shitty memory sharing with shitty video card, BIOS doesn't allow me to get rid of all of it
Fucking shitty (better than most Intel CrapSets, though) nVidia GeForce GoLag 7150m
Only VGA monitor out, no DVI
Headphone/analog 1/8" out weak as fuck
Windows 7 x86, (who needs x64 with so little RAM, it's just less compat. in my experience) I've had OVER 9000! OS changes in mah system
About 140GB of HDD space, currently divided in three partitions (third being HP's restore shit which probably some OS raped, I dunno if it still works) first being main Winblows 7, second my old MicroXP thing which was good, I probably wanted EYE CANDY and some faggot feature and drivers to switch to 7 or maybe I got a virus (I don't remember exactly why)
Now I have the same problem with audio I once had on linux, but I DIDN'T have on XP, which is not being able to run an ASIO/ASIO4ALL or low latency application (basically my piano simulating shit) and something else (such as Firefox w/ youtube). Wheee.
Past operating systems:
First was Winblows Vista Home Premium?
It got all lagged and sucked
Linux Mint 6 Felicia with some shit without making it's own partition, running in an image but still by itself... aasf, then I just dumped Windows, then dualboot w/ XP, then moved to 7 Gloria - my first experiences with Linux
A bunch of Debian GNU/Lunix systems, I went to Testing, some annoying bug and slow and I left. I couldn't make my own packages so I moved to:
Slackware 64bit? Anyway, I left and moved to 32 bit. Got lots of experience, it was awesome to compile shit compared to past distros, KDE 4, blah blah.
I shat it trying to compile a realtime kernel for audio to reduce XRUNS which FAILED, it was a piece of shit and fucked up the mem. Even after switching back to normal kernel, I had forgotten to make modules_install on the piece of shit (which in Lesbian was a whole different procedure) and there was a problem with the X server and neither the keyboard nor the mouse worked on X, I restarted and restarted trying everything, until I recompiled the kernel and remembered about the make modules_install, booted and found mah WiFi didn't work. No idea why, I tried reinstalling everything (wicd) and modprobe the wireless driver, reinstalling the firmware, nothing worked. Had to ditch it.
Tried to install media distros, failed because of some faggot outdated fonts package (hail Debian and its shit package system)
I might have made shitloads of dualboots...
Shitty Windows XP thing with some shitty 7 themes which confused everyone, not very good
MicroXP, don't really remember why I left it
Windows 7 twice, first I got a virus and shitload of lag. Nothing could fix it
I might be missing some, but whatevur lol 0.o

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
Translating the cost to USD, it wasn't much more than $220*. I shit you not.
The parts are used but from good sources(the CPU is OEM however as I wanted it new)
Keep in mind that I really wanted to keep it cheap so I hunted parts for half a year exactly. I still am $50 left in debt, but what matters is that I finally have a machine to create next-gen graphics(and hopefully jump into the game industry at last).
*I did NOT count the 80GB HDD in as I had it long before.

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
Now some fun facts.
- The CPU cooling is a P4 one strapped with steel wire to the board
- The motherboard is a crappy ASRock N68-S
- I have a CRT monitor which can display at best 1280x800@75 (there is a higher 60 mode, but my eyes wouldn't forgive me)
- I use a ball mouse with no scroll wheel. On top of that, I lost the bottom cap somewhere.
- I never planned to buy the vidcard that takes about 40% of the computer's price.
- This thing isn't that powerful, do your computers really fail that much? This isn't even a triple core, just mere 2.7 x2.
- The nice black case I got for free long ago
- No DVD drive unless I borrow my bro's
Problem, officer?

Well I did a similar thing, but it was an old Athlon cooler on a AMD X2 chip. I still got that chip up to 3.0GHz from it's stock 2.1GHz though.

If that's not sarcasm, I'd hate to see how much you envy my Intel Core 2 Quad @ 3.4GHz, 4GB of ram, and my GeForce GTX260. Plus two 1TB HDDs.
I'm still in debt for this.

Re: The PC/Tech Thread
I still beat everything in quality/price equation.
Lucky me knowing a few people that upgrade their computers constantly and won't hesitate to cut a deal on their older parts. (I believe that the card was a rip-off, but not like I had a choice)

Honestly, my house really isn't a mansion made of gold and silver. Despite what I say, my parents aren't billionaires. We aren't high-class; at the most, we're low-mid upper-middle.
I'm just saying that a wiser move would've been to get a more recent graphics card and at least one more gig of RAM (or at least have two gigs of DDR3).

It's the most cheap AM2+ board I could get my hands on, so fuck you. I have two slots only.
Besides, it's not like that with UnrealEd, 3dsMax and Photoshoop open I'm even close to running out of memory. And that's the most I do.

My current system:
Core i7 920 OC'd@ 3.0ghz with Intel's standard cooler
7GB (3x 2GB, 1X 1GB) Corsair DDR3 1333mhz
Gigabite X58A-UD3R Motherboard.
1X 500GB WD 7200RPM HD, 1X 320GB WD 7200RPM HD (Total: 820GB Storage)
ATI XFX HD4850 1GB DDR5 Overclocked: 680Mhz GPU Core/1075mhz Memory (XFX's cooler seems to do a good job of keeping it under 70C at full load)
In comparison, my grandparents' computer:
Phenom X3 8650 @ 2.5ghz, standard AM3 cooler.
4GB Patriot DDR2 1066mhz
Gigabite MA785GT AM2+, AM3 Motherboard
1x500GB WD 7200RPM HD
