RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

oh gawd, i cant stand mac :O

i used to take my laptop into a mac store and "introduce" it to them..used to carry on about all its exciting features just to watch these guys wanna hit me and be able to watch them as they could do nothing, lol, the most they did was call security

macs are all good though if ur into gfx etc

i still have a pentium 4,lol

but a computer is a computer and if it works thats all that matters Smile
Back in like 2007 or so I would often make graphics in PhotoShop (Elements) (examples here: clicky ), and that was back when I had my laptop (MacBook), and it was awesome. Then in August of 2007 it fucked up, so now I have this. Nowadays I use computers for the Internet and sometimes fucking around in Terminal. (Although there was once a time when I messed around in AppleScript.)

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

lol..one thing i noticed is all movies with pc's in them in australia always have mac os,but last year (2008) i saw something odd...a vista machine :O

kinda confirms the theory that vista was supposed to look like mac :O

vista is all eye candy, windows 7 is just the same imo,but not as bad as vista..the best os imo is windows xp

it was the best thing Microsoft ever made.

but then well a computer is a computer

maybe ill type a thread later on about choosing the best os and pc for you or w/e

idk,when i get time i guess..

Favorite browser?

For me:
  • Google Chrome, on Windows
  • Opera, on Linux (This will change once chrome gets a Linux version)[/list:u]

EDIT: My favorite browser on Linux is now Chromium, since it's usable now.

My laptop isn't really a gaming laptop, but it plays most of my games fine, and it's a good Internet browser.

BROWSER: Mozilla Firefox 3 with NASA Night Launch Theme

LAPTOP: Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, AMD Athlon Dual-Core QL-62, 3.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G, with a custom black Aero cursor and a pretty good Windows Sidebar arrangement

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

My laptop can run Oblivion on medium with good playability, after a few minutes it starts to ultralag and gets unplayable "out of nowhere".
Probably a cooling problem. I even disabled PowerMizer but it still happens.
What cooling pad do you recommend?
(Running on WinXP)
Favorite browsers, Epiphany on Linux, Firefox on Windows. Firefox just doesn't work that well on Linux.
I started to hate IDEs, since they do weird shit for the game engine I use in both windows & linux versions, and are harder to configure for them. I just stick with VIM and make, they just do the job.

his doesnt sound like a cooling problem
have you got an antivirus,i often disable my autoprotect feature because it scans all the files the game engine is opening and becomes very laggy and crashes, and btw thats on a qaudcore q6600 so it doesnt matter how fast ur comp is

check ur av,thats a pretty popular one probly...as for a cooling pad, never had to use one so i dunno

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

Changing the processor on a laptop? Damn impossible.

Oblivion runs fine the first 10 mins with shadows and distant land on in Medium, then it LAGS, and the laptop gets warm. The air the small fans blow are much hotter than in my brother's desktop, a LOT more powerful than this crap. I think the lag is a heat problem, the GPU underclocks when the laptop heats, when I look down so it's not rendering anything it doesn't seem to lag.

I do have a light antivirus thing, ClamWin, none of that Norton/McAffe bullshit for me, and I'll NEVER, EVER use it again on my life.
It only takes 928K, and it's almost always on 00 CPU. OpenSource rules on efficiency on security.

Those Extreme Shit graphics are worse than mine. I feel the same way.
Buy a desktop, it's cheaper and more worth it. My dad bought this crap for $800, a desktop of the same power's worth $300. I can't stand the lag on games.

I'll think I'll build it myself, even though I haven't done it before. Shouldn't be too hard though, right?

Best thing you can do is build a desktop, not just buy it from a brand.
If you have a crap laptop and all you do is web browsing, I don't think you need a new one Noo Try linux or something.

ATI just released their new DX11 video cards, the HD5870 and HD5850.

The HD5870 is a fucking massive beast, only 1 inch away from being as big as a foot-long subway sandwich.

Also, these cards can support up to 6 separate screens together, some crazy shit. (Each screen can be up to around 30 or 42 inches).
