RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

D:

Yeah, that PC in the pic looks sick. Although with watercooling blocks on the RAM, CPU, both GPUs, and god knows what else, it'd be a bitch to install and maintain.

On another note....I think that eventually AMD and ATi will die out, and Intel and nVidia will be the sole GPU/CPU manufacterers. ASUS especially has the sweets for intel...they have so many more Motherboards for intel CPUs than AMD cpus. :/

Thoughts?

No
If AMD dies out, Intel can start pushing prices up...And I doubt people are gonna be smart enough to stop buying products in protest by then...

I wonder if there's any open source hardware movement going on. If not, there should be.

There is. It's really tiny though. So tiny the only reason I know about it is because I read about hardware supporting OSS in a readme file.

Both of them have turned their drivers into slow, bloated behemoths though. I hate the fact that they are the only people making half decent graphics cards.

Yeah, I've been thinking about switching over to open-source drivers. Does anybody have any info on em?

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

The only other drivers I ever used was "omega drivers" or something like that, for my old Radeon many years ago. Dunno if they still update those or if they're any good...

Also behold how little system resources it takes up

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

There's probably some flavour of Linux out there somewhere that uses less than that.

Yes

P.S. It uses 16-18mb ram if you don't install it to HDD. If you install it to HDD it uses 8-10mb ram. Can be made to 5-6mb ram after HDD install. I don't know how much HDD space it uses, but it's ISO is 4.3mb, so can't be much.

I'd be happy if I actually had the skill to put something like that together. I had to take extra math in high school instead of shop classes? Fail.

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

I've actually installed Debian/Linux Sunday night, and while it is a nice little OS, I'm having problems setting everything up. Even though my tablet isn't supposed to run on Linux, I've heard of a project to successfully run said tablets. And while GIMP is nice, I rather just use Photoshop, but that hasn't been ported or anything to Linux, and the only way to possibly use it on Linux is via a Virtual PC-esque program.

My main goal is to create a personal workstation on Linux and use Windows to generally goof off. And if I fail, then at least I can use Linux to tinker around with computer-type stuff while I still have to share a computer without accidentally destroying my dad's data.

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

Since this got resurrected, I may as well post my new PC specs here...

AMD Phenom X4 9550
4GB Corsair XMS DDR2-800
Sparkle GeForce 9800GT
Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS
550GB HDD space
Antec Neopower 650W PSU
Antec Nine Hundred case

More graphics power is just unnecessary unless you have a bigger screen. I have a 17" and it's perfectly sufficient.

Oh dear Jesus. That would cost like 100,000 euros here in Romania. How much did the whole thing cost?

Re: The PC/Tech Thread

I bought most of it in the UK... er. I think it was around 500 pounds. If I had bought the same stuff in South Africa, it would have cost around R11k... which if you convert it back to pounds, works out to around 730. Big difference.
