RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

In my experience, it's not censorship, it's more the fact that they don't want it to be a distraction at school.

No censorware at my school. Each student has a computer account, all visited websites are logged. If you go to something like flashgames.com, your account will get suspended. That means you're doomed during IT (try completing coursework when you can't logon to a computer), but since you can be logged into an account at two different computers at a time, you'll generally convince a friend to let you use his.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Well, if you don't know the reason, ask! Show them that you aren't going to passively stand when your rights are violated.

Re: This website is filtered

This is interesting. Is the school obligated to provide computer access to students who misuse the common resource? I don't think so. In other words, computer use is not a right.

I agree that if you are denied access to the computer system provided for the common use of all students you should be informed of why you are being denied. At the school where I work we have all the students sign an agreement that they will not do certain things on the computer or they will lose their access. This is necessary to protect the resource for the majority of students who understand the world doesn't rotate around them. Therefore, I believe computer use in a school environment is a privilege, not a right.

No. You have it wrong. Computer use is a right. Do you know why? It involves only you; no one has to help you "achieve" that right. Something is not a right if it involves someone else to give you something.

1. If you believe in unlimited computer acess and rights in school, the world doesn't revolve around you.
2. Thank God you didn't post a attachment.

This is pretty much right, it's the school's computer so they can pretty much control what you do with it.

Re: This website is filtered

We don't sing anything. The rules were explained in our first year, and are clearly posted in both computer labs (we have two, one for class room use, while the other is freely availiable to students during free periods or after school. Each has about fifteen computers, and both are supposed to be used for "educational purposes", but it isn't that strictly monitered. Playing games will get your computer account suspended, but checking your e-mail will generally pass. Hell, I use the school computers to visit School Survival).

But I do think that any removal or suspension of the student's access to a computer should be explained. You shouldn't be left wondering: Why on earth can't I log on?
