RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Why is it that more teachers can't be awesome like you? :/

Re: why I'm a teacher and why I'm here

hey! wahw u are an awsome teacher (though im not classifieing, i hate it that almost all of the kids in my school look at teachers as some other type of person, there just ppl with jobs!!!) and you can make a differance, yay for not conforming to the closed minded "non-conformists"! if more ppl who hated school actually tied to change it by FIXING it, then we'd be way better off.

anyway, to your first post: "all that jazz" PLEASE TELL ME THAT WAS A CHICAGO REFERANCE! (if not, u can just back away slowly staring at me weirdly and deciding that this site has finally gotten to me)

anyway... ugh, yes this site has an arsenal of pervyness, but not everyone is obsessed with buttsex..... i'll think of an example if you give me enough time.....

anyway, it seems that im not the only "walking encyclopedia" of useless info, (not that its really useless) i love random facts and weird historys behind things!

thing you said bout japanese schools and not getting good jobs: read TEST by William Sleator, it reminds me of that

lol to the anime thing, i love anime! and all its weirdness, thats what makes it kick american cartoons ass! even the movies...

ever think of coming to america to teach...? i know it would suck, but we need teachers like u!

hey matt, does she remind u of reda/nagy?

Re: why I'm a teacher and why I'm here

Awesome! A teacher that isn't akdon. Also, any clue about why my art teacher made me clean the art class (it's a fucking pigsty I swear) for not participating in a game. She's done this twice now. She's also put me on detention for 'not making an effort on my card'. I'm not that good at art.... Anyways Welcome ! I hope you enjoy your time here. Also there's this really good article on the main site called how to be a good teacher. It's helped alot of the teachers I know out. I suggest reading it. http://www.school-survival.net/kit/How_t...eacher.php

Re: why I'm a teacher and why I'm here

Apologies all for the delayed response time. I'm teaching and studying at grad school at the moment so it's hard to get time for anything.

Thanks for all the awesome teacher comments, I appreciate it, although you might not say that if you were my students! I still have bad moods and get angry and enforce rules and write tests and nag my class. I'm not perfect.

Hannyness - This year I'm teaching kindergarten in the mornings and teaching social studies up to third grade in the afternoons and I run the school literacy program. I don't teach teenagers which is what I assume most of you are (feel free to correct my assumptions though). I'd like to work with some older kids but I didn't want to become a subject specialist - the thing I like about elementary school is having my own classroom and my own group of kids everyday for a year.

BobManPerson - Swearing is generally considered to be impolite and disrespectful at the workplace or outside of your peer group which is why it's not accepted at schools. I remember having a big argument with my English teacher about it when I was in high school. My premise was that words considered to be cuss words were completely arbitrary and became innocuous over time anyways so why not just use them and speed up the natural evolution of language. I was told it is required at schools to maintain the standards for acceptable social conduct and communication that exist in present society. In my own time I swear like a pirate (not a butt pirate incidentally) but I doubt parents would want to continue paying my wages if I did it in the classroom or allowed the students to.
That said, I don't mind too much if someone blurts out a f*** after stubbing their toe, but I don't like it when my students verbally assault each other, swearing or not.

SoulRiser - I'm also glad I didn't grow up in Japan, and I think you are on the right track with the restrictive society = weird anime and other social expressions of repressed feelings equation. I'm pretty sure the connection has been researched for someone's thesis somewhere.

Cryptevah72 - Yeah, all that jazz is a Chicago reference, although I didn't know that when I started using it years ago, just one of those phrases you pick up that gets stuck in your vocab.

I haven't thought about teaching in America, I'm pretty sure I'd hate it. Since the whole No Child Left Behind muck the system over there has become ridiculously intolerable for students and teachers alike. This year in Australia they just introduced some new nation-wide standardized testing crap, I hope they don't end up going down the same crooked, dead-end path. School is getting pretty sucky for teachers too, I don't mean to defend all the bad teachers out there but between the parents, the administrators, the school boards, and the government - it's easy to forget about the kids.

Thanks for suggesting TEST, I haven't read it yet but I'll add it to my reading list (big for grad school at the moment). If you want to find out more about education in Japan I recommend "Education in Contemporary Japan: Inequality and Diversity" by Okano and Tsuchiya - it will make you feel better about education in America Stabhead and then I recommend "Inside Teaching: How Classroom Life Undermines Reform" by Mary Kennedy, if you want to know more about what your teachers are thinking and why they do the crap that they do.

Also, reda/nagy? che?

AWOL - I read the How to be a Good Teacher article. It's good, I was expecting all sorts of impossible wish lists like turn the classroom into a night club and give out alchopop or something but it wasn't like that at all. I really don't think you are asking for too much and how nicer class would be if it was full of 'people' instead of a teacher and students.

I had a think about your art class dilemma...but I couldn't figure it out. I've made students clean up after class before, but only when they'd made a nasty mess or completely disrespected property, I don't really see the sense in making students clean up as a punishment otherwise. What was it you didn't participate in? and why? I also think it's ridiculous to punish students for something that wasn't done well that they don't know how to do well, but maybe the teacher thought you were not doing your best or had messed up on purpose?

Also, I want to recommend a site to you http://www.proteacher.com, there's a forum for teachers to discuss issues, one is called VENT and it's a great way to understand the other side of the story - teachers with students who they don't know what to do with, crazy parents, mad principals, etc. I think it would be great to have some student input there too (damn I just wish there could be more talk and problem solving between teachers and students to make school better for both). I think it's mostly K-8 (sorry but that's my sector) but still an opportunity to gain some insight for those who might be interested.

Sorry for another long post - hope ur all enjoying the weekend

Hey, we're all imperfect. I'm sure everyone on this site has done something regrettable at one point or another.

Yeah. Originally curse words came from a collection of superstitions that said that some words were blessings and others curses. Thus, the curse words we have today. I tend to swear like a sailor, myself. They're words. A collection of frequencies, amplitudes, and wavelengths. Not much to make them "bad".

Kinda like how England had that whole spanking fetish going on a few centuries back. Because boys were always spanked at school. Surprise, surprise. Look what that did.

Quote:Cryptevah72 - Yeah, all that jazz is a Chicago reference, although I didn't know that when I started using it years ago, just one of those phrases you pick up that gets stuck in your vocab.
Heh. Memetics, I could talk for hours about that.

Yeah, everyone these days is on edge. Our education system is going to shit. Cutbacks everywhere. Sigh.

Yeah. Once people are no longer people all sorts of regrettable things become standard. Hell, if people recognized that everyone around them was just like them, it would be a much more pleasant place to live.[/quote]

yah, it's true! I have a bad habit of going AWOL. Sorry all, still here! Got a whole bunch of Uni assignments due NOW and parent-teacher conferences all next week and report cards and even end of term tests to write (yes, I hate making them as much as you hate taking them).

On a more positive note - I moved house last year to a new tokyo shoebox that actually gets a lot of sun so for the first time ever in my life, when I plant something, it doesn't immediately die so I've been using all my spare moments to grow basil, lemon balm, marjoram, thyme, peppermint, rosemary, and cherry tomatoes!

Planting stuff is uber fun.
I planted a tree about 2 years ago, it's growing taller than me now. Planted some flowers in an old rubber maid container and they are doing good too.
Don't even get me started about my raspberry bush. I love that thing.

Awww, you have a rasberry bush... I'm super jealous! The closest I can find here is a blackberry bush but it's just not the same. I did find a mulberry tree though - nothing like a tree covered full of mulberries and tongue, hands, face, and clothes stained purple from binging Biggrin

Usually the reason a teacher resents students talking or passing notes during class is because this would indicate that they are not listening to what the teacher is saying and/or trying to teach. Also it can be disruptive to other students who now have 2 sounds or activities competing for their attention.

I don't remember learning much at all in high school that was academic. By year 7 or 8 I was more interested in my peers and most of what I learned was social. Recently there has been a greater emphasis in teacher training and professional literature on using co-operative and peer learning in the classroom and there is significant research supporting the benefits of allowing, encouraging, and supporting more peer interaction in the classroom. As per usual, many schools have been slow to change the typical lecture style of instruction despite the research.

Perhaps you could suggest (politely) to your teacher that they incorporate more group work and co-operative learning in their lessons, satisfying both your need to interact with your peers and the teacher's accountability to teach the curriculum?

Thanks Will Smile

I teach in an international school in Tokyo, although it is international in the loosest sense possible, most of my students are Japanese and I work with a Japanese co-teacher. It's probably better described as an immersion school.

Re: why I'm a teacher and why I'm here

Why is it that the amount of information a teacher is given to teach every year almost can't possibly be accomplished if fun/creativity is incorporated into the class?

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

I don't know. It sux for everyone. Students hate it. Teachers hate it. I don't know why they think half the stuff in the curriculum is important.

My personal theory is that we need to learn enough basic numeracy and literacy to enable us to continue learning independently. After that, say around upper elementary school, we should be able to learn about whatever interests us which is bound to lead to further discoveries of other stuff that is interesting and before you know it we will know a whole lot and actually be interested in it too.

We could still have teachers to help and stretch us by asking questions and pointing us in new directions we weren't aware of but we wouldn't mind because they would be aiding us to learn more about what interests us anyway. We could even have assignments and projects still to share what we learned with each other and get better at communicating our understanding but there would be no tests and assessment would be in the form of feedback rather than evaluations. Curriculum content could be covered in a completely open ended way so say we had to learn about medieval times we could choose whatever interested us - the fighting, the clothes, the castles, the art, whatever and use that as a base to explore the era.

ah. I'm off in la la land. Just finished an assignment Smile

By the way, that is what my current graduate course is like (except I still get marks for the work I do) but other than that I am free to choose whichever aspect of a broad topic I wish to explore. Why wasn't the rest of my schooling like that?

If everyone has to learn the same specific things regardless of whether they want to, you're going to have to do some pretty crazy stuff to get them to learn.

If you let them learn whatever they want, they'll learn a lot more, but most won't learn those specific things that the school requires.

The fun/creative activities are somewhere between these extremes.
