To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Domain names ?????????

I wanted to make my own website for anyone who is willing to become a part of it.
The thing is i dont get why i have to register a domain name. Why do i need to, i cant just make it mine.

Registering a domain name IS making it yours.
You also must pay for it, so you can receive the service of it being hosted on another server. I suppose it is possible for you to do this yourself, but the cost would be gargantuan unless you hosted an incredibly large website (Like... millions of unique views per day), or a very, very large amount of moderately large websites.

I host on Sepwich.com as a favour of a friend. And I also registered a free domain NAME (not the domain at www.dot.tk

So my website is www.hannyness.tk

Domain names can't really be owned... they're just rented on a year to year basis. I suppose if you rented one 99 years in advance, you could say you "own" it though. Laugh

What if i had my own server network. Like if i become a mega nerd. I can just set it up. I mean why should i pay a company to host my crap when i could control it myself.

You'd need your own DNS server, I believe.
Of course, you don't need an actual URL, just your own server to host something...I think.

Heh. You don't seem to know what domain names are. You can host your server, but if you want a domain name for it, you're probably still gonna have to buy one.

Now a quick explanation. The following is quoted from here
The IP address of www.google.com is 209.85.129.147

Basically, when you type say "www.google.com" into your web browser, your computer sends a request to the Domain Name Server (DNS) requesting the IP of "www.google.com". The DNS then sends it back to you and THEN you connect to that IP.

So, basically, you can have your own webserver, but the address will be like http:// 195.65.19.213/
If you want a domain name, you need to buy and register it.
