RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

A teacher's side of things Pt. II

Ok, let's get some things straight first. A person from www.theteacherscorner.net signed up here and responded to us. I'm impressed and glad.

Re: smithmt

You're right about me being an asshole, because I was being in asshole in that thread (here). This site is typically a good place for me to vent, and I don't blame you for not liking what was said along the lines of, "Man, those people are fucking disgusting."

Why don't we try to have a good discussion now instead of just flaming each other?

Well, I'm not much of a flamer, Cool despite being a theatre teacher... I would love to educate some of y'all on the feeble amount of knowledge I have. As long as you guys will be free and open to share with me about questions I have. I know some of you will feel like you're a snitch with answering a question here or there, but hey,
  1. You don't have to answer
  2. I DON'T work at your school.
so, with the cards on the table, bring on the questions.

And, Stratovarius, I would have used the word jerk. It's a better movie (Theatre teacher, remember) And I will make the comment that anything done online is permanent and will affect you for the rest of your life, which is why I filter my posts... An acquaintance of mine was fired because of pictures of her on someone else's Myspace page.

OH, and, leave the other teachers over there alone... I will direct those who will be interested here. OK?

Well actually I'm a college drop out of sorts, I made my introduction here. It's long (1.3k words according to MS Word).

Hm, I didn't really have any questions so...

What do you think is the biggest problem with the public education system at the moment?

EDIT: By the way, you have private messaging disabled (according to the forum) so no one will be able to respond to your PMs.

lol, OK. the Biggest problem with education today would have to be NCLB (No Child Left Behind) lovingly pronounced Nickel Bee. Here we have a program that is slightly underfunded, over emphasized, and lets face it... based on a practice used in Texas for decades. before NCLB, Texas ranked 14th in the nation. FOR WORST EDUCATION GIVEN. and now, we have the entire nation being judged by the Texan barometer. and now, please excuse me. I need to watch Good Eats on the food network.

Re: A teacher's side of things Pt. II

I think the NCLB act ended up creating a discord between gifted/talented and remedial programs. The resources and time for various GT programs ended up getting cut back. Not only that, but the NCLB act increased accountability for schools in general which I think is never a good thing because then schools just tend to administer standardized testing. Something I never liked.

I took the TAKS for a few years which was horrible in my experience. I swear as I progressed with each grade, the TAKS did not get any harder. It's really bad that they would make this our benchmark when kids in general are capable of doing so much better than this.

Yeah, everything has been cut back. absolutely everything.

This is more the problem:

as far as the TAKS (and previously, the TAAS) it is set to the exit requirements (degree of proficiency) and from 5th grade (or so) on, it's basically the same test, which is why we can "teach to the test." we know what a kid is weak in, and the format that they will see it again, so we can focus on that... but all of this is very low on Blooms (see http://www.officeport.com/edu/blooms.htm) it doesn't require creating anything and rarely requires evaluating anything. most is knowledge and comprehension, there is little beyond that level.
