RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Sadly, plenty of parents do things on that list all the time.

i'm one lucky bastard i have never been grounded or had stuff taken away from me,my parents have never done anything that is on that list except maybe 1 or 2 things but they don't do it all the time, instead usually my parents talk to me rather than ground me.i hate when parents ground their kids from everything that would drive me insane if my parents did that, and when parents do this it drives the child away from them more.

yeah, i know. gotta love these sissy kids nowadays, griping about boot camps. all they do is drug, kidnap, and torture a few of them and they get all whiny! come on you little brats, it's just a few punches to the gut and electric shocks, then you get a nice long rest in solitary confinement with thorazine injections to calm you down. what's to complain about?

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
I think we need to resist domestic violence against minors by their parents a bit more definitively.
I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.

Heh, I was grounded like once or twice in my entire life and I'm 17. My parents had a point both times.
If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
I've actually had quite a few of those things done to me (and my sister) by my family. No internet, tv, playing outdoors, regulated tv and internet viewing, threats/screaming, spankings with belts or branches from trees, etc.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
Oh it doesn't happen anymore, they stopped the spankings when I was around 12. Everything else continued to happen until I was 18. Take that back my family still threatens me when I do something deemed "wrong" to them. You know sometimes, we would all sit around and talk about the punishments we all would get growning up, how we (my sister, I, my cousins) can't complain cuz the previous generation had it worse, which is true.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
Just 'cause the previous generation had it worse, doesn't mean it's all okay now. Humanity has come a long way, but there's still a long way left to go... for some people more than for others.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
Ugh. That wasn't a fun article to read.
What a load of crap. Sure the kids may be obedient due to the consequences, but there's always the chance that they might be a little messed up in later life because of this, or they may disobey and start doing worse things as a form of rebellion.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
Stopping a child from going out intot he big wide world isn't going to solve anything. It's just going to turn them into a brat, parents snooping through their kids stuff is a complete invasion of privacy, it's wrong and should be illegal. Insulting them is a nother form of mental abuse, which is illegal.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
It's not illegal at all. If you were a legal adult, you could sue people who insult you, but people under 18 can't do that (as far as I know).

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
despite asian stereotypes (im indian) my parents are pretty cool. my dad sometimes gets mad about grades, like if i get a b, but he has high-blood pressure. anyways, he doesn't ground me or hutrt me or anything, he just takes a hour to relieve his anger and is then fine.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
I think limiting a child's life to the basics, on what adults think their children should need in their lives is shocking.
By not letting a child experiment in the big wide world, in later life the child will resent it's parents on most grounds.
Snooping to make sure your child is safe is one thing, but not letting them have a life is disgusting. It shouldn't be alowed, but yet some parents do snoop through their childrens things. What ever happened to privacy?
School is practice for the future, practice makes perfect. Nobody’s perfect so why practice?

It never happened to me.
Until I got Linux. My parents do not know how the Hell to operate it, and I never read the instruction but I use it just fine.

Re: Legal Ways of Hurting Children and Teens
Quote:Quote:steve says:
do u think it should be legal for parents to do that?
steve says:
im making a list of legal ways parents hurt teens
SJ says:
nope
steve says:
if u were talking to a judge and he said why shouldnt it be legal what would u say?
SJ says:
i would say ..... erm ..... i dont think parents have the right to take things that are precious away from there children and i know that most parents care about their children but sometimes they need to give them some room and stop controlling them and let them go
Now what can happen when the Internet is taken away as punishment?
For some suicidal teens it is their lifeline. They use it to get emotional support. For others it is a place for them to learn about many things that are not taught in school. It is obviously a tremendous learning resource, so when this is taken away the teens are denied an opportunity to educate themselves.
One day I would like to see a law which makes this kind of punishment illegal around the world. The Internet is uniting young people worldwide, it is educating and informing them, it is helping save lives. This kind of arbitrary punishment does nothing to develop a young person. It is simply a convenient way of hurting a teen and manipulating them into obedience by reminding them who's the boss.
The articles bad but the person who is making it is nice.
