RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: Dvorak keyboard layout

Woah, that seems really cool! I never have liked the current keyboard structure...and I make so many mistakes when typing because my mind is going faster than the obnoxious thing. This could be really great for me!
And I might actually learn the proper typing technique because as of right now I use a ridiculous method.
So thanks!

Oh shoot, my family probably wouldn't appreciate me messing with out current keyboard though, nor would they go for a new "weird" one. Damn family...

You don't need to change the keys around. Just enable the layout.

I would do it, but I'm much too lazy, and I'd probably just revert back to QWERTY in a day.

Hmm. I do screw up a lot when I type. I'd do it but I'd have to physically label the keys on my keyboard and type staring at the keys until I get used to it. This will also majorly screw up all my controls for my games. Laugh

A keyboard's a keyboard.
Go be a Keyvangelical somewhere else(lol, joking, I just don't see the hype about a keyboard layout. Next thing you know people will be all hyped up about a new form of plastic bag).

Are you dumb? It's at least 50% easier to type. This means for the average person, they should be able to type at least 50% faster. 50wpm on QWERTY = at least 75wpm on Dvorak.

Re: Dvorak keyboard layout

Dvorak should be advertised, IMO.

You don't have to get a new keyboard, put stickers on yours, move the keys around, or irritate your family members by forcing them to use Dvorak. You can easily set the keyboard layout to Dvorak for your computer account, tape a printout of the layout to the bottom of the monitor, and consult it when you can't remember where something is, thus learning to touch-type.

The keyboard layout is changed at the OS level (though there are hardwired Dvorak keyboards) and nearly every OS that anyone's ever heard of supports it.

It's entirely possible to maintain QWERTY proficiency while using Dvorak as well. I use Dvorak exclusively and can still type 60wpm in QWERTY (around 100 in Dvorak).

There's no reason to not at least try.

Because I'm already used to QWERTY.

And QWERTY has a more catchy name.

Re: Dvorak keyboard layout

Whatever works for you.

I learned Dvorak because I wanted to touch-type and figured I might as well learn the better layout. I switched back to QWERTY to practice typing in it so I can tell the RDC at basic training I can type and possibly be selected as Yeoman. I hear they stay off the Yeoman. I'm at 50-60 wpm, having barely used this layout in a couple of years.

I find Colemak EXTREMELY easy to learn. I don't know why. As for WPM, I've only had a few days practice with Colemak.

But go with Colemak. Stats wise it's 'just' beats Dvorak. It also doesn't move ZXCV keys, so you can use them for undo, cut, copy, paste etc easily.

But yeh. If I'd known about Colemak and Dvorak at the same time, I prob would of gone with Colemak, not Dvorak.
