RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

School photos

I don't want to sit for school photos this year. They make me want to claw my eyes out, they won't let me wear my jacket and last year the school used my photo publicly without my permission. However, my mother does not understand why I might have a problem with this.

"You need to stop letting things get to you."
It's not about things getting to me, it's about me no seeing why I should have my photo taken when I hate it and the school can use it without my consent.

"They'll just use an old one."
She honestly thinks this is a valid reason for why I should sit for the photos. Yeah, okay, they'll just use an old one, but at least I won't have given them another photo to use and abuse.

"It's like you're just getting worse!"
I'm not "getting worse", I'm just not putting up with the shit that I used to.

"Sometimes you just have to do things you don't like doing"
I don't like sitting for an exam, but I do so anyway because I know that I have to.
Sitting for a photo, on the other hand, is something I don't like doing and have no reason to do.

"Your grandparents like receiving photos!"
They can still have photos. They'll just be ones where I'm actually happy and myself, rather than a shitty false smiling pained expression one.

Re: School photos

Wierd, did you talk to the school about the public usage thing? thats a bit creepy... None Did they make you sign something? And did you try suggesting family photos as a replacement to your mom?

Re: School photos

Yeah, my family used to get fotos all the time, and we'd send those to relatives, not the shitty school ones.

Anyway, your mom won't be there right? Can't you just leave the line?

Re: School photos

I should point out that it's illegal to use someone's photo publically without their permission.

...OOOHHH, WAIT, this is school we're talking about, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with fucking with your legality, or lack thereof![/sarcasm]

Re: School photos

My photos just generally end up looking terrible. Unless I have that hat.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

One time they made me have a double chin. I was embarrassed.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

Re: School photos

I'll admit that while I generally didn't care much for school photos after elementary school (figure out why), there were a few times where I had a lovely lady photographer. Not a 40-something woman who could stand to gain weight so she's not a fragile stick, but 20-somethings. Cute ones. Ones I don't mind touching me.

Hurr.

Re: School photos

Well I didn't have to have my photo taken. I still need to submit one to the BOS, since they need photo ID so I can't send somebody to do my exams for me, but at least I can take it myself.
