RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

My theory.

Like most human beings, there are certain things that I fear/do not look forward to. However, when those occurances happen, I end up wondering why I was scared/not looking forward to the event in the first place.

My theory, in uncomfortable situations, is that the anticipation of the event is more uncomfortable than the actual event.

This can also apply to postive scenarios. For example, Christmas Day. I've always looked forward to Christmas for various reasons, such as gifts, spending time with family, the whole spirit, etc. However, when the day in question comes, I end up enjoying it, but not as much as I enjoyed waiting for it. So in this case, the anticipation ends up being more fun than the event. To quote Lemmy, "The chase is better than the catch."

Don't know if this is a new theory or not, but I'm just putting it up there.

Re: My theory.

Interesting theory. On the other hand, sometimes things end up being waaaay better than you anticipated them to be (this has happened to me a few times)... though I must admit I do tend to particularly like the "chase" aspect of most things more than the actual getting there. Once I'm there it's kinda like "meh, what now?"... but I always find something else to work towards, either that or something to add onto whatever I just achieved.

Re: My theory.

I mostly agree.

Anticipation and dread are strong emotional processes. Often times they outweigh the actual process itself.

Let's do the time warp again!

Re: My theory.

Interesting. I think that part of the cause is the human's amazing capacity of subconscious imagination. Honestly, how do you think the monster in the closet came about? They didn't make it up to scare themselves.

Re: My theory.

i think that humans, more then anything else ive seen, tend to create hype. for example, video games. well use halo 3 for an easy comparison. Halo 3 was to be the biggest launch title for the 360. it has the largest preorder total ever reaching over 4 million copies preordered alone. bungie promised it would be a good game. halo 1 and 2 were both phenomenal games. using all of these things, people would generally build up an expectation for halo 3.

now, on another side of this, you have the game bioshock. this game has no real prequel. there was literally, no hype about this game, and no large expectation was assumed of it. for you who dont know, bioshock has won game of the year and numerous other awards. it has, in my opinion, the best storyline for a video game, in the history of video gaming.

i think anticipation has a strong effect on events, whether they be good or bad. im not sure if this has already been put forth by someone else, but if it has or has not, it seems to make a lot of sense.

i also think that that this applies to social situations as well. stereotypes and labels also lead into a bias(a form of anticipation) about a person or an object or such. if people said stoner or dropout you might think lazy and uneducated(typically). not often the case. someone else might say CEO or varsity quarterback, and you might think successful and well like. it could very well be that those people are alcoholics and cope with themselves by drinking themselves into a stupor. like i said, its just a stereotype, but the hype behind a label is still the same. >_>

and like i said, its all my opinion.

Nature created neither servants nor masters. I want neither to rule, or be ruled.

Re: My theory.

I went through this. When i was younger, I had to get Novocaine injected into my infected toe, for the 3rd time. I was so dreading it, I would not let them do it. I had to be threatened after we left the doctors for it to be done. We drove back and I did it.... but the dread was so much worse then the actual event.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: My theory.

Ah. Generally, that would be an exception to the norm. But what if it's a kind of pie you don't like? Or if it's a kind you still like, but one different from the kind you were expecting?

Re: My theory.

your theory is indeed correct for the most part. why do you think serial killers keep killing?
what happens to them is when their fantasies finally are not enough to sustain them they must live out their fantasies to the smallest detail and when their fantasies do not live up to their expectations they must kill again, and again untill they have lived out their fantasy perfectly and since the act will likely never live up to their expectations they can never stop killing. also when a victim does escape or the killer describes the acts they often say how the killer would tell them about what they are going to do to create that dread and the killer would soak up and enjoy the victims dread and foreboding. the best way people i know avoid the foreboding would be to convince themselves that it won't be so bad or to simply focus on somthing else, though the latter is more difficult for most people.

you cannot stop someone who will not be stopped
