RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Life Value

I was thinking about this question earlier. Please tell me what you think about it.

What lives should we value, and what is it about these forms of life that makes them valuable, whereas the others are not (or even have negative value)? Why do we value humans over animals? Why do we value normal humans over mentally- challenged humans?

Aint no power like the power of the people cause the power of the people don't stop!

I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends.
- Abraham Lincoln

Come children and students abide by our rules
we'll send in the troops to recruit at your schools
and we'll tell you it's noble, we'll tell you it's cool
and you'll hear every word that we're saying
and there's room in the jails if the classrooms are full
for the times, they are not a-changin'
come mothers and fathers and friends of the slain
while we exploit your loses to fund our campaigns
we brought you the war, now there's no one to blame
you best hope the new leader ain't crazy
you can vote how you want but the outcomes the same
for the times, they are not a-changin'

Agreed. This is a difficult question. I think the concept of value is a lot like that of morals, as in each people have their own ideas of what's valuable and what isn't.

Re: Life Value

We live in an intelligent world. Now someone will dispute this and talk about all overwhelming levels of stupidity in this world... But really. We are intelligent life. We value intelligence. Whether it be social intelligence, physical intelligence, musical, or otherwise. We value it. In modern times the soul might as well equate itself to consciousness.

That's kind of what it's narrowing down to. Maybe I speak too much on the behalf of others. For me the option of abortion goes out the window when the fetus has developed a consciousness and can feel pain (which I think happens sometime in the second semester)? That's kind of a simplified standard.

I'm too tired to really think about this. More to come later.

Let's do the time warp again!

Re: Life Value

I'm with cosby on this..
Life's value is interpreted by different views.
A person's life could be important to his family, friends, teachers and even co- workers because he works around them and build a sort of bond with them but to strangers his life is just another life in a sea of them.

Re: Life Value

I don't really know what to say here either. But I think despite whatever logic may say, emotion takes a big part in this. These views in general will vary from person to person, and individuals will hold specific individuals higher then others.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: Life Value

I value all life... I feel bad if I accidentally kill an ant or something.

I don't value "normal" humans over "mentally challenged" ones, because each human is unique in their own way.

The reason I value human life over the life of critters is because I can't communicate that well with critters, and they don't understand me nearly as well as (some) humans can. But critters are still important too.

Re: Life Value

I think we value certain things (probably including lives) more so than others because we learn to. If you are constantly told you are better than something from the moment you are born, you tend to believe it. Same thing with religion in many cases. If you only know of one choice then there is really only one choice.

Re: Life Value

I think that all life should be valued in the same way because everyone has a value to someone and it doesn't matter who it is but somebody would be crushed by them not being around anymore. And this goes for animals etc too.

COMMUNISM is when you have two cows, the governement takes both and gives you the milk
SOCIALISM is when you have two cows and give one to your neighbour.
NEW DEALISM (is when things go wrong) is when you have two cows, the government takes both, shoots one and milks the other but then throws the milk away.
CAPITALISM is when you have two cows and then sell one to buy a bull.
FACISM is when you have two cows, the government takes both and sells you the milk.
NAZISM is when you have two cows, the government takes both and shoots you.

I typed: "end of the world" into google and saw the hiroshima bombing and 9/11, irony much.
