RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Summer Reading?

I have a list of books to choose from, and wondered if anyone had suggestions as to which I should choose. Any suggestion is appreciated!
I must read one of the following:
Bless Me, Ultima | Anaya
The House On Mango Street | Cisneros
The Art Of Happiness | Dalai Lama
The Count Of Monte Cristo | Dumas
Like Water For Chocolate | Esquivel
The Princess Bride | Goldman
A Doll's House | Ibsen
Nectar in a Seive | Markandaya
Cry, The Beloved Country | Paton
Anthem | Rand
Iron and Silk | Salzman
The Joy Luck Club | Tan
Night | Wiesel

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: Summer Reading?

I don't know of many of those books. But of the one's I do, I would recommend Anthem & Night. I wouldn't recommend House On Mango Street, though. I had to read it for Honors English II (of which I am mercifully out of, presumably), and did not care for it at all. I found it too confusing. I disagree with those who call it a classic, but different tastes for different folks, I guess.

Thanks Nite!
After Wikipedia'ing all the books, Anthem looks amazing. I am going to read that one.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Re: Summer Reading?

A Hand Maid's Tale by Margaret Artwood was intense. Or I found it intense. There are few movies/books that really bother me. I mean I'm actually kind of jaded when it comes to things truly disturbing me. This book did. It stood out among the books I read this summer.

It is a little bit more feminist-geared but that's no reason to not read it. It's excellent.

Re: Summer Reading?

yeah, Night's a good book. there are quotes from it all over the walls of the Holocaust museum in DC.

I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins.

Re: Summer Reading?

Well, let's see here.
Night is an amazing book. I've never found a book more graphic. Anthem is amazing. Ayn Rand is a damn good author. I have a few more of her books that I got off bookchan if you like Anthem. The Art of Happiness sounds interesting as well. The Dalai Lama is a fairly important political and spiritual leader in today's world. The Count Of Monte Cristo is a classic. I'd give it a read, too.

Anthem was out of this world. I suggest it to everyone.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

What is with Terry Pratchet? Every person I know - every single person - loves him.

I don't know. But this is the first book of his that I've read and I was pleased. Even though my friend was pushing Gaiman and Pratchet on me so much that it was more of a turn-off than a turn-on...and I was subconsciously stubborn about spiting her and fulfilling self-prophecies about how it wouldn't be all that great.

It was actually a good read. But I hear that Gaiman had a lot to do with that. Pratchet is apparently more hit and miss.

Good book actually. Hitler actually seemed like a pretty okay guy, if it wasn't for the whole dictator and monster thing.

Re: Summer Reading?

On that list you have some actually REALLY good books.
Night was really good and it was short so that is a plus. You can read the whole thing cover to cover in less than 3 hours. I highly recomend this one for an easy read

The count of Monte Cristo is an excellent book. Kinda long though. Out off all the books I nwould choose to read this again. Its about a prision break. Besides the authors name is dumbass, how rich is that?

The princess bride was a good book. I read it a long time ago but still watch the movie all the time. Good stuff. "No more ryhmes and I mean it! Anybody want a peanut?"

Darthif you are going to another jewish school it is a MUST that you read and turn in you report on either Mein Kampf or a book deneying the holocaust. It would be to lulzy not to.

Yes, it would. But it wouldn't be funny when my school told my parents. :/

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

Tell them you did it for the lulz. They would HAVE to understand then. If that doesnt work bake them a cookie but try not to eat it.

Re: Summer Reading?

I was supposed to see a play of The Doll House in year 10, I never ended up going, made me fail a huge part of drama I think but yeah, everyone who saw it said it was terrible, they said it was like a soap opera and all the characters were intensely annoying. But yeah, I never read the book or even saw the play so it might be good.
