RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Hi all my SS crew...

To all my SS crew members, it has been a very long time since my last post; I have been fairly busy keeping things together in my life, dealing with school, learning a new instrument, having a boyfriend, making new friends, and simply holding all this together at school.

I was in geography, wondering about SS and how I hadn’t been active there for a while, also making a mental note to say hello. But as I got thinking, I decided that I would tell you all about the classes that I am taking at the moment, and what I think of them.

Maybe you could tell me about what you are all doing too, and how you feel about them and maybe what could be changed in the curriculum?

English
English class is certainly a drainer. At the moment, we are currently studying Macbeth, and have been for a couple months now. After analysing this once interesting play, after squeezing every interesting scene, character, line and title out of its original fascinating mould, I have nearly come to be completely sick of it. Although we have neared the end for this topic in English class, I still can’t help but argue against it.

One of my English classes start at 8:10 in the morning too, which is a huge drainer. -_-

Geography
Ah, Geography, such a subject, with a broad range of topics that does interest ones mind, so many things that can be learnt about the world in Geography class. Its just a pity they don’t teach it.

This is my least favourite class out of them all. Why? Because I want someone to sit me down, and tell me things about the world that I never knew could exist.

I want to know such things about global warming; I want to know something new. What I do not want to learn is why the Nile River is so important to Egypt, and I don’t really care about the Aswan High Dam that helps control Egypt’s floods. This does nothing for me.

My teacher. She is an interesting character. I contemplated the fact that she could just have menopause, but then I realised that she is far too old for that. She is an older lady, grey haired, short, and she likes to yell. She likes to yell at anything in her way. Which I do not like.

Our class is full of people who like to talk loudly, not do their work (which I can’t really blame them) and annoy the teacher. So sometimes im asking the teacher a question, and while she is trying to answer me, her attention is dragged across to the other side of the room where someone is doing something wrong. Then all of a sudden, she has completely forgotten about me, and she has already started yelling, from right next to me, to the boys across the other side of the room for mucking around.

Health
Health class. Oh how boring and soul destroying this class is. Learning about the development of children and why childcare centres and play centres are important for children doesn’t really stimulate me at all. Although, coming from my old school, where I was not taught of contraception due to their ‘religious beliefs’, we finally got to study a whole term of Sex Ed, which I thought was really great! I found it very interesting, although we could’ve gone into more detail about safe sex.

We have had three teachers all together for this class too. The first one had to leave because she had a baby. The second one was a drainer, she was just so boring, she never changed her facial expression, and was always spoke in monotone -_-.

The good thing about this teacher is that she always gave us these set tasks in out booklets! From this, I could tell what we were doing the next lesson, therefore, I planned ahead and got my work done 10 classes in front! This left me able to wag! Hurrah!

After that teacher, a new teacher came in, which we have now. This lady, unfortunately, also speaks in monotone, and has the most ear clenching voice. She is loud, and her voice, well, its just terrible, I hate listening to her speak!

In this class, I think we should learn about Australian Health Care. I think that we should know about what Medicare is.

Psychology
This class, rather interesting, is too organised. I believe that there are too many terms given, and everything is very specific. Although interesting to some, not too interesting for me.

Although, I do enjoy the topic that we are doing at the moment; Mental Illnesses. I have to do a large assignment on Bi-Polar disorder, which, is due next week! Bah!

The teacher, she is not too bad, she allows us to eat inside class, which I like, she is pretty loose with rules too.

Art & Studio Art
These are both of my favorite classes! Let’s start! These two art classes are very laid back, our teacher, which we call by their first name, lets us use any materials we like. The curriculum and work that is set is not organized at all! (Organized in the sense that is doesn’t follow strict guidelines of which we can and cannot do)

These subjects really allow us to open up with our art and express ourselves as much as possible. I have made many art works in these classes, and I plan to take these classes on again next year!

The art rooms are awesome too! I like going in them when I have spares to catch up on work I missed. Also, when the computers in the library are all being used, I like to go to the art rooms and use the computers there, this is because im a usual art student in their class, therefore I get the privilege to use them =D

I really enjoyed learning Stenciling! We made our own stencils! They allowed us to make as many as we want too! So, ive got my very own ‘Where is Osama?’ one, and Tim Armstrong one too. I might post them both up.

Final Summation
School isn’t that at the moment, im not loosing my mind anymore, phew…

Re: Hi all my SS crew...

Your Art and Studio Art classes sound awesome.
But that sucks you don't enjoy your psychology class so much, 'cus that's my like, favorite thing to learn about.

I highly suggest Mobb Deep's albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, if you have not listened to it yet.

I don't think any one has mentioned your purple text yet. I would like to make a remark that it has a negative effect on my corneas. Thank you for your time.

Re: Hi all my SS crew...

I, for one, like your color choice. Wink White gets boring after a while.

You know, I was seriously just wondering about you today, since you hadn't been around here lately. Nice to know you're doing alright and not losing your mind anymore Smile . I'm curious, what instrument are you learning?

*is extremely jealous*
I'd like to learn drums...and I would, if it weren't for lazyness, lack of money, and lack of musical ability.

Purple rocks. I don't know what's wrong with everyone else. Cool
Green is cool too though.

I like purple. I guess it looks different depending on which site skin you use.

It's good to hear from you again Smile
I was also wondering what you've been up to.

Oh! my apologies Miss* Dreamer!

Its only not a music ability when you dont play anything!

Find a place that lets you take lessons, and dont look back! Learning an instrument that you enjoy is really fulfilling!
