RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I think I'm ready to quit.

School is starting yet again. For over a decade now, I've gone through this depressing cycle of work.

I've been an A+ student for the entire duration of my time in school. Everyone kept telling me that all my hard work would pay off some day. "They" kept telling me that hard work meant greater rewards later. Well, I'm going to be turning 18 soon and as far as I can tell, all of my work and sacrifice means exactly jack shit.

While I was slaving away on some project/assignment, my peers were out enjoying themselves with the opposite sex. While I never did anything that could be perceived as 'wrong' or 'stupid' by teachers and parents, my peers were out partying. To make matters worse, I've always seen myself as a small and weak guy.

I feel like I'm ready to call it quits and stop trying to achieve this mythical thing known as success. If my 18 years of life have taught me anything, it's that where you end up in life is not up to you. No amount of work can overcome the fact that I was just never meant to enjoy life. Perhaps I should just drop out and work some blue collar job: less work, same result.

Firstly, chin up. Life is a great wondrous thing that can be awesome, or shit. Secondly, you're time here is limited, so make the most of what time you have. 3rdly. Why not drop out? The freedom will come as a stark surprise at first. You can choose what you do and when. It's unsettling at first not having someone dictate what you do 24 hours a day.

Finally, read this.

You're 18? Are you a senior? You might as well finish your last year. The problem with dropping out is that you're only allowed to drop out when you might as well just finish school anyway.

Definitely at least get your GED.

Re: I think I'm ready to quit.

Hmm. Yeah, getting A's are only worth something if you get them in your last year of school, and use that diploma to apply for colleges/jobs. That's about all they're good for. It's a shame you wasted that effort early on... I did the same thing, though. But I wasted time doing other things after school, too, which also didn't end up being worth anything except the experience... knowing what not to do next time. That's something that's best learned the hard way, I guess.

It's your choice as to what you do, ultimately. I'd recommend either a regular diploma if you can stand to stick around that long, or a GED, which I've heard is pretty easy to get and almost the same. As far as jobs go, there's all sorts of weird jobs in the world if you look around a bit. Maybe there's even something you like... Maybe you don't even need a "job" at all. Smile

Personally, I've enjoyed college and life a helluva lot more than school (wait, that might imply I enjoyed school... I didn't really). So it can definitely get better.

I've never liked partying though, so if you ask me, you didn't really miss much. Razz

Re: I think I'm ready to quit.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm not feeling so alone anymore, and that's definitely a good thing for my morale Smile

I've decided that I'm going to finish this year. I've come too far in the system to drop out now, and this is my last year before college/university anyway. I'll consider the past years of my life spent working a testament to my ability to work well Razz

As for college/university, I'm not quite sure. I'll have to give it a few months' worth of thought and find out what I actually like in life. After all, I don't want to end up studying something that doesn't interest me.

Re: I think I'm ready to quit.

I advise you at the very least take a year off school (and work too if you can).

You mean after school, right? This is a good idea... gives you more time to decide what to do next. Yes

Yeh, I mean't after he has his diploma. I just think a lot of people rush off to college without thought because it's the norm. Taking a years break (assuming you don't spend most of it working) will help at least a little.

Well, don't be afraid to not go to college, too. It really is not for everybody.
