RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

And of because of federal blackmail, it's abstinence only...what a bummer.
Though if my parents sign a piece of paper, it won't happen.
Buuuuuut....although my dad is anti-abstinence only sex ed, I don't know what my mom thinks.

Re: Oh, the joys of Sex Education!

sex ed is always quite weird at our school.

year 7: dont do it, you will get pregnant and die and your dick will drop off and you will die (gender permitting)

year 8: you must love the person you do it with first and then never have secks with anyone else or god will hate you forever

year 9: dont forget your protection

year 10: here is how to put a condom on a banana

year 11: buggar off and fuck who you want.

generally it is a mixture of people sitting t the back laughing their heads off and the boys at the front yelling practical, whle the teacher despairs.

What do they do all the time in class? Have you repeat "just say no" over and over? Srsly, what else is there to really say when the only point is "just don't do it"?

our teachers just give up trying to each us abstinance after they ask who has had sex and half the 'chavs' stick their hands up.

I read that, and though I also oppose abstinence-only education, the arguments are not sound. I'll explain below.

Quote:Now, logic dictates that a person should always go with the 100% chance over the 99% chance. However, people are not logical when it comes to a lot of things and there's a few particular areas where the logic centers of the brain gets beat down by some other parts. The main area in which this happens is when someone's life is at stake. If you're walking along in the forest and a bear jumps out and charges you, the logical thing to do is play dead like they tell you to in all those nature shows on TV. But do most people do this? Nope. Most people's logic turns right the fuck off and the "fight or flight response" kicks in. Now, neither of those choices is logical. A human being can't expect to win in a fight with a bear, nor can a human being expect to outrun a bear. Nevertheless, most people will attempt one or the other when put in that situation.

Why? Because it is the strongest human instinct that reaches down to the very core of our being and, in most cases, is more powerful than our reasoning mind! Survivors of animal attacks invariably report that they "don't think clearly" when in that situation. Of course not, because at that point, pure instinct takes over to keep you alive by even the stupidest means neccesary (like fighting back against a bear).

You may be asking yourself, "What the fuck does this have to do with sex education?" Here's your answer. As powerful as the human instinct to survive is - so powerful it'll make you go apeshit on a bear - there is another very powerful human instinct that is not far behind the will to survive. The second most powerful instinct in human nature (and not 2nd by much) is the instinct to have sex! And like the will to survive, the human sex drive doesn't fucking care about logic or reason! As I said, the reasonable choice to protect yourself from pregnancy or STDs is *always* abstinance, because it has the highest rate of success (100%). Well, shit, playing dead with a bear has the highest rate of success too, but that's not what most people do, now is it?! No, and it's because of human instinct!

See, the problem with "Abstinance Only" education is that it is an attempt to teach a group of people (teenagers) who have a particularly high sex drive (and therefore a particularly strong instinct to fuck) that they should use their brains, think about the consequences of their actions, and not have sex until they're married. You fucking morons, you can't out-teach the 2nd most powrful human instinct! No matter what they learn, no matter what they know, no matter how much sense it makes, no matter how logical it is, no matter what you tell them, NOTHING will ever stop human beings (of any age) from having sex!
I think that while the "flight or flight" response is instinctive, it's a bit more complicated with sex. To begin with, when attacked by a bear, people are very scared (=stress, pressure) and don't really have time to think. That's why they don't. With sex, most people might be stressed, but likely much less than during a bear attack, and overall are in a much better situation to make a choice.

People mostly have sex not because of pure reproductive instinct, but because:

a) Sex feels good.
b) Peer pressure. *

If you observe these two carefully, you'll find out that both are in fact because of instinct. Sex feels good to encourage animals to have it ---> reproduce. Obeying peer pressure is an instinct as well-since we're pack animals we try to stick with the group (remember those experiments when scientists found out that social exclusion is just as painful as physical pain).
* Peer pressure is something that has fascinated me for years. At first I thought its role is greatly overestimated, I felt that I based my actions upon my own mind. Less than a year ago I saw American Pie. I realised that the movie influenced me to think that not being a virgin a sign of social status within a hierarchy, and actually felt encouraged to fuck. In the past couple of weeks I've been becoming more conformist (a school-lover would call it "fitting in") and realised that the less of an outcast I am, the more I care about the opinions of my classmates. And it might not always be a good thing, but I've realised that though peer pressure might have had little influence on me in my pariah years, the vast majority of people, who are actually quite a minority in these forums, are influenced by it a lot.

Quote:Let me put it to you this way. By age 20, 75% of people have had premarital sex. If we were betting on that, it's 3 to 1 odds. Now, imagine it's the Superbowl. You've got $5,000 to bet with and your bookie tells you there's 3 to 1 odds that your team will lose. Even if you're the biggest fucking fan in the world, do you place that bet? C'mon motherfucker, give yourself an honest answer. Would you bet money against three-to-one odds? WOULD YOU? Here, asshole, I have a custom made revolver with 4 chambers instead of 6. I've just loaded 3 of the chambers and left 1 empty. Now put it to your head. Will you pull the trigger? Will you risk your life on 3 to 1 odds, you stupid cunt?

The answer is NO. You wouldn't risk your money nor your life on 3 to 1 odds! But HERE is what you WILL do. The odds that your child will have sex, no matter what you teach them, are 3 to 1. Instead of teaching them how to be as safe as they can possibly be when they have sex, YOU'RE such a fuckin' genius that you make the 3-to-1 bet that they won't have sex and you DON'T TEACH THEM SHIT!
The odds are 3:1 in the general population. Obviously the stats will be higher or lower based on the persons upbringing, opinions, neighbourhood, and social acceptance. And if you're successful in your teachings, you will reduce the odds.
Let me emphasise I don't believe making this risk, the odds will always be too high, and the kid is always better off with as much information as they can get. I'm simply pointing out an untrue sentence.

Quote:So, here's what a great fucking parent you are. You won't risk money against 3 to 1 odds, you won't risk your life against 3 to 1 odds, but you will risk your child's health and possibly their LIFE against 3 to 1 odds!
Again, false argument. The chances of your kid having sex are 3:1 (they actually aren't as a pointed out before, but that's irrelevant for this part). The chances of your child getting STDs (e.g. the health risk) is lower than their chance of having intercourse, because having sex does not necessarily cause STDs.

I want to point out once again that I'm a huge opponent of abstinence only education, and that plenty of the article makes valid points. I'm just pointing out the invalid ones, maybe because I'm a freak when it comes to polemics, maybe because I just like having opinions I agree with backed up with flawless arguments.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Re: Oh, the joys of Sex Education!

Nicely done, Puchiko. Yes

More information is always good, but making assumptions about people like "you're going to screw someone before the age of 20" is just, well, insulting.

Also, I thought the percentage of people who have sex before the age of 20 would be higher than that... that's always the impression I got from the people around me and TV and whatever. I thought it's more like 90% do it and 10% don't. And out of the 10%, at least half of them actually want to but just didn't get an opportunity, it's not like they were actually avoiding it on purpose for a reason. Laugh

Well, I looked this up. Truedig cites a study, reported by the Associated Press. Here's the quotes:
Quote:The study, examining how sexual behavior before marriage has changed over time, was based on interviews conducted with more than 38,000 people—about 33,000 of them women—in 1982, 1988, 1995 and 2002 for the federal National Survey of Family Growth. According to Finer’s analysis, 99 percent of the respondents had had sex by age 44, and 95 percent had done so before marriage.
Let me repeat that for any of you that don't read in between the quote tags: 95% of Americans have had pre-marital sex.

Quote:Finer said the likelihood of Americans having sex before marriage has remained stable since the 1950s, though people now wait longer to get married and thus are sexually active as singles for extensive periods.

Does this really need a conclusion? I'll write one anyway. There's no point in pouring millions into sexual education that doesn't give teens the information they need. If they're going to become sexually active, and the study shows the vast majority will, they might as well know about contraception and STD prevention.

When researching this answer through Google , when I typed "pre-marital sex" the suggestions (Google suggest search term based on number of results) were: "pre-marital sex", "pre-marital sex bible", "pre-marital sex and the bible", "pre-marital sex islam", "pre-marital sex in the bible", "pre-marital sex in islam", "pre-marital sex sin". WTF?

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

So, 95% of all Americans who tell people not to have pre-marital sex are hypocrites.

I have massive respect for any 40 year old virgin who stayed that way on purpose. Especially if they're male.
