RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Sleep Deprivation is a form of Torture

If you fall asleep in a class, especially one of the earlier ones, do the teachers really have a right to wake you up/punish you because you were doing something you have no control of?

Re: Sleep Deprivation is a form of Torture

I trained myself to live without sleep, food, or water while I was on a school-sponsored field trip in Disneyland for four days.
That's how I manage to survive life with only 5 hours of sleep each night (except on weekends; I usually conpensate for the lack of sleep I get on weekdays by sleeping about 14-15 hours those days).

your paycheck is your education. they teach you you learn thats the agreement that none of us agreed to, this is why school is wrong but im just pointing out how someone who is pro-school could tear this argument to tiny bits

As an anti-school person I can tear the above argument to bits effortlessly. Biggrin

First thing is that they're obviously not supplying a satisfactory education-look at the statistics. A quarter of US high school graduates couldn't pass the GED! Look at how much kids actually know!

Furthermore, education is not legally tender 2cents .

And as you pointed out I didn't agree to it. Therefore, there is no contract. So what's actually happening is slavery Whip . Yay for our education system!

3-4 hours of sleep , Go to bed at around 12:00 at night , sleep 3 hours and wake up at 3:00 go on the comp until 7:00 A.M.

But on weekends at my dads usually 10:30 at night until Miday (12:00 dinner time).

If I'm at my house then its usually an all nighter. (Weekend)

Re: Sleep Deprivation is a form of Torture

I don't know. Sometimes I kinda really like sleep deprivation. After a certain amount of time, you get into a super good mood and everything is megalulzy. I went a day through school with that feeling, it was great.
Sure, drugs would also do that but drugs are bad, m'kay?

And sometimes I just won't sleep the night before school on purpose, hoping I'll collapse in the hallway and get out of school for a few days because of exhaustion. Probably unhealthy but whatever.

Men are born ignorant, not stupid; they are made stupid by education.

Re: Sleep Deprivation is a form of Torture

Because of school I have insomnia, which is really bad. On the last weekend I had 2 good nights of sleep but last night I only slept 5 hours. Got to bed at 3 AM and slept until 8:30 in the morning. I tried to go to bed again but I only managed to spend 4 hours until 12:30 PM failing to do so. I got so fed up with it that I didn't even go to school today. I mean, this place is destroying my health, social life, self-confidence and they don't even teach me something useful... on the contrary: by staying in school all day I can't learn what I want. Most time spent at home is just doing nothing useful, because I'm only just licking my wounds from all the boredom and uselessness of school.

Re: Sleep Deprivation is a form of Torture

I wonder if them keeping with you up with homework could be considered a form of sleep - deprivation; it's like, you have the choice whether to do it or not, but if you don't then they pile on bad grades, and so then they're essentially obligating and encouraging (just shy of forcing) you to do it for whatever twisted reasons... it's peculiar to think about.

I do! I <3 sleeping. It's the only time I'm truely happy. Well, unless you count the exact moment I encountered this website and realized what it was - that was happiness too. But when I'm asleep, there arn't any pressures, or anything. People don't expect you to do anything at 2:00 am except sleep, which is the easiest thing ever. It's nice. It's sort of like being in loopy land, where anythings possible, yet your nice and warm and comfortable. Smile

Why wouldn't you want to sleep as often as possible?

Why?

Sleeping is a waste of time. You could do many things instead of sleeping.

Well, it depends on your point of view.

Sometimes I think being awake is a waste of time, when I could be sleeping, and having dreams that are usually more rewarding than conscious experiences anyway.

Instead of sleeping you could spend time being Tyler Durden.

Re: Sleep Deprivation is a form of Torture

The pros and cons of sleeping have been discussed in a previous thread.

I'll repost what I said back then.

What I like about sleep is that no matter how horrible things happened that day, after I sleep it's all distant past to me. I have an awkward concept of time, some things seem like they happened ages ago, when they actually happened just last week. Once I sleep, it's past.
I think sleep separates days for me, and it really helps me move on with life.

Another good thing about sleep is that it's 4-8 hours when I don't have to worry about anything.

Of course it has its disadvantages, most notably the sleepiness I must endure when I skip sleep. Another con is nightmares. They can really freak me out.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Re: Sleep Deprivation is a form of Torture

I sleep in math class almost every day. (Not kidding) It's the earliest class, the hardest class, and the least interesting class. ALL my classes are boring as hell, but math is the worst. My math teacher made some godforsaken thing up where if I sleep, she writes a frowning face in my assignment book and takes a point off my grade. Upset Hey, most of the time I can't control it, because I get only an hour or two or three of sleep a night. And sleeping is more interesting than than learning the proccess of, um... Confused Something like dividing decimals and mixed numbers, oh yeah, when I'm a historian I'll really need to know THAT, and other bullshit. On weekends I'll try to get as much sleep as I can, like 15 hrs.
