RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

It isn't cowardly to take action to avoid something you don't want to have happen. Whenever someone calls someone else a coward, what they really mean is, "You have different priorities than I do!"

Adjective: Excessively afraid of danger or pain.
Noun: A person who lacks the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things.

Since death is needed to make life important, then it's cowardly to delay the needed for forever.

Quote:Arrogant in the face of life.
I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. Arrogance means thinking you can never fail or something. It might make sense to call someone arrogant if they believed they would live forever without even trying. But to call them arrogant for trying? It doesn't fit.

Yea it's confusing,

Adjective: Having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities.

Well immortality is quite important and a powerful ability. Since immortality would never end, that means that it's basically infinite life, and you would need an infinite amount of effort to match what the ability costs.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

OK, so first supposing you're right about it taking infinite power to live forever:
There's a difference between saying, "I have the power to live forever," and saying, "I want the opportunity to try to live forever." The second one is not arrogant.

But, though you're technically right about it taking infinite power to live forever, what actually matters is the power you need per unit of time. Humans get energy from food. To eat food to get power continuously is extremely not arrogant. It would be arrogant to refuse to eat and say that you have the power to live forever anyway. I think we'd also call that person crazy.

Re: Definition of life

Immortality is ignorant because you want more time in this life for what little time you do have. Immortal-seeking people usually watched everything go by when they were young and want a piece of the action again. You're power hungry. Its cowardice for that same reason too.

Re: Definition of life

Everyone wants and is entitled power over their own life. If you had to kill a bunch of innocent people in order to live forever, then, no, you are not entitled to that. But if you get it without infringing on anyone else's right to life, liberty, and property then there's absolutely nothing immoral about it.

lol No I definitely disagree. First of all it is human nature to not want to die. Second maybe someone would just like to experience all the future may possibly have to offer. You are making assumptions.

Well death IS needed to make anything in life important. Let's say you completed the most important thing of a lifetime. If you lived immortally, that would be nothing. Like a masterpeice on a infinitely large whiteboard is nothing because you could always make a bigger better more detailed drawing. Maybe I'm wrong. But if you had a limited space, then all of a sudden it's how you place your lines and whatnot to make a beautiful drawing.

But if you had a infinite amount of ability to stay alive forever, ugh fuck it I don't understand this shit. Why do I even try. What do I get out of this, trying to understand life? Am I enlightened because of it? Is there a measure of enlightenment? Why do we answer philosphical questions? The more and more I think of my viewpoint the more I think it's wrong.

RE: Definition of life

life is just there. it's not special, not amazing and not unique. there is no objective purpose to it, no hidden allegory. it is just one big genetic accident.

LoL?

Human life is the self-actualization of the universe. Even with possible alien life forms it is still incredibly unique given the size of the universe.

You know, I am all for the, "there is no purpose of life." type view. Yet, don't say it isn't an amazing unique thing. Tell me... would you rather have just gone through eternity never experiencing this fleeting moment of life? Maybe I am just taking your post the wrong way though.
