RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Plastic ID tags

At my school, it's mandatory that everyone wears their plastic ID card on a string/other necklace device on their neck. Recently, in addition to the one dollar fine we have to pay to get a temporary ID, students are also supposed to receive a lunch detention for not having their plastic one and wearing it at all times.

Now, I know this seems petty, but it's the principle, not the rule. So despite the phone call home and the office referral and ISS that I'll probably receive, I feel that it is the right thing to do to not wear my ID.

My reasons:
1. Whether or not IDs are required for most "jobs," and school is supposed to prepare us for those, mandatory wearing of anything is against the Constitution's First Amendment freedom of expression rights, and fuck them for not respecting "minors" enough to recognize our rights and treat us as the young adults that we are.

2. Having to check for and enforce the ID rules/punishments wastes students' and teachers' time.

3. The string is uncomfortable, particularly for me because I have acne on my neck.

Well, I see your point, it all depends, what are the penalties? A detention, ok, and if you skip that, suspension, I seriously doubt you could be expelled unless they have a strict no-tolerance policy. You've got to ask yourself, is this fight worth it or is there something worthier to rebel against? This is assuming you want to be in the school, if not I'dsay drop out or do what you want and if tehy expell you who cares. But yes you are perfectly justified in not wearing the tag, it's a ludicrous method they are using to keep track of the students. Tell me, does the school activley use a database to see where every student is? And the ID cards, do they have barcodes and numbers?

Re: Plastic ID tags

We have to wear these, too, and we're even restricted on what string we can wearit on. EVeryone has really dodgy pictures of themselves on them, too, and I don't know a single person who enojys wearing them. We don't have to pay for a temporary ID, but if we forget it twice we have to buy a new one and they're something like three pound. It's really stupid, because it's bad enough having to wear such a strict uniform anyway (I get constantly told off for not wearing black shoelaces Cuckoo ) and still being forced into those damned things.

Re: Plastic ID tags

Uh, disgusting. I'd definitely speak out against it.

Our IDs are for accessing the building, paying for lunch, and borrowing books from the school library. Since it's an ISIC, it also works as a student discount card, and a public transport pass (you still have to pay for the coupon though, this just works as the ID to go along with it).

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Re: Plastic ID tags

In my school we have to wear them too. It's not too bad, the only annoyance is that they're made of crap plastic and will tend to break after a while (from the metal clip thingy scratching and eventually cracking the punched hole).

In our school replacement ones are FIVE dollars. I think it's a money sink!
