RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Homeschooling was illegal??

Quote:Access to schooling increased steadily from the middle of the twentieth century. HIGH SCHOOL attendance burgeoned following World War I and again after World War II. In 1954, the Supreme Court decided that African-American children should be allowed to attend local public schools instead of the separate schools they had been attending since the end of the Civil War. Desegregation of public schools was finally enforced in the 1960s by Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Thus, by the end of the 1970s the United States saw high school graduation occurring for the largest percentage of its population ever before–or since. In response to this and other issues, the decade of the 1980s ushered in the era of school reform. One of those reforms was homeschooling. It has always been available to the privileged, some of whom were tutored at home. But when large numbers began to homeschool, district officials began to arrest parents, saying they were encouraging truancy.

Disgusting, Ihad no idea before that they had actually arrested parents for homeschooling. You can find the article here http://www.faqs.org/childhood/Gr-Im/Homeschooling.html

Homeschooling is still illegal in Germany, and lots of people have been arrested and had their kids taken away... Hitler still made that law, but they've only started enforcing it now.

Re: Homeschooling was illegal??

As far as kids go:
Parents > Government... even if they are religious fanatics, at least they're not the government. The fanatical ones are rare, though.

Remember: we only hear about the religious ones 'cause most of the news articles I find about it are from the HSLDA, which is a christian organization. They won't report non-christian ones even if there are lots of them.

Better to be indoctrinated to love your neighbor than to blindly follow your government.

I've got to disagree. Germany has 82 million inhabitants. Now, say one million want to homeschool.A million is a lot of people, but that doesn't neccassarily they'll get what they want.

Homeschooling is illegal here too (legal until 5th grade, school attendance is compulsory until 9th), and there are plenty of people who'd like it changed. But not enough to change it.

I guess the point I wanted to get across is that we've got to respect minority viewpoints as well. You can't just write off thousands or even millions of people who just don't make up the 51%.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Re: Homeschooling was illegal??

I'd be willing to bet it's illegal because of the image it's gotten as a way for religious parents to indoctrinate their kids. That is abuse. It's too bad we have people like the HSLDA perpetuating this image.

Urban Dictionary, on homeschooling Wrote:An option for parents who are too poor for private school. Basically these folks think the entire outside world other than the 700 Club, their megachurch and Wal-Mart is corrupt and sinful. A example schedule for a home schooler:

9:00-11:30: Bible Study
11:30-1:30: Discussion of the latest James Dobson/Rick Santorum book
2:00-3:00: Seminar: "Why Negroes are evil and sexually promiscous and why Jesus tells us to hate them"
3:00-4:00: Daughters: lesson in cooking, sewing or houskeeping
Sons: Math, Science (Young Earth Creationism), History (White Christians rule, everyone else deserves their suffering), Government (why Democrats are Satanic), or English.

The only good signature is a dead signature.

This is not what I'm saying all homeschooling is like. It's just the image it's been getting lately, thanks to all these religious fanatics. This does't mean there should be no homeschooling, but this at least shows why some countries ban it. I definately wouldn't want to live with a religious homeschooling family.

Places where parents would teach that to their kids: Texas, end of list.

Nice way to stereotype, 26. The majority of Christians aren't racist, many are Democrats, and a key tenet of Christianity is not wanting everyone else to suffer, but to love everyone. The 700 Club is, as I'll say again if you ask, about as Satanic as any real Satanist(it's misleading and won't get anyone to Heaven). Also, a large portion of Christian wives have jobs just like men.
You, my friend, as mislead. A Christian homeschooling would be better than a corpratist public schooling.
