RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Stupid projects.

Baisically, this thread is about stupid projects you've been assigned. I'll start by telling one i've been given today.

Today, my stupid, mentally unstable History teacher had us do a fucking elementary school project. We were supposed to build a castle out of cardboard boxes. This sounds like something you'd give to a 4th or 5th grade class. Hell, I actually was assigned such a project back then. Definitely not something you'd give to a classroom of 9th and 10th grade students. How are we even supposed to get this trash to school?

In other words, i'm prolly not doing this thing.

Actually, I was thinking of just bringing a single, unmodified cardboard box, and calling that a "castle".

Write "Castle" on it with big black permanent marker.

Re: Stupid projects.

Heh, I just thought of something, even though it's probably not exactly "stupid."

One of my final projects in school, in my English class had to do with the book, Invisible Man. We first had to write an essay about what we basically thought the main character was. We had to describe him basically. And along with that was a collage that was supposed to basically be the visual version of the essay. We had to go through magazines, cut out pics that we thought described the main character and post them on a poster so that it made a collage. Pretty creative project, huh?

Well, being the person I am, in the essay I decided to say that Invisible Man couldn't be described, that he was some sort of enigma. People who've read this book will probably be able to agree with me because if you read the book, you'll be able to see that the main character always changes who he is. At one point, he is an ass-kissing college student, at another, he his a some sort of hobo wandering aimlessly, and then he turns into some sort of leader, and some other things too. Rather than actually say all of those things, I thought that saying that he was just simply a mystery and truly unidentifiable would be the best way to put it. I mean hell, that's creative and a hell of a way to think outside of the box.

So that's what I said in the essay. On the collage, I put nothing on it. Why? Because like I said, he is unidentifiable, and there was no use trying to identify him. So I turned in the collage not blank, but full of unidentifiable objects (that's the way I saw it at least).

A couple of days later, my teacher told me that she understood why I did what I did, but "it's kinda hard to grade a collage with nothing on it."

So basically, she knows that I'm thinking outside the box, but it's not worth a decent grade.

What did I learn that day? Don't do unconventional things and expect a conventional result.

Also, I do not see myself flipping burgers just because I failed a few assignments. I have no interest in working for a fast food chain, and thus I will not be flipping burgers. It's not something that magically happens to all dropouts.

Say that to the thousands of drop outs out there that regret it so much they would choose to live their lives again. Say that to the kids in africa who can't afford school. Seriously, school is a nice positive place and drop outs are just lazy kids who have no future.

School can be very positive, but not if you go in there with a negative attitude. You will probably drop out, I can tell, especially from your use of words such as "dude" which only suggests that you're uneducated and have been damaged by pathetic use of the english language.

Re: Stupid projects.

I'm just going to copy and paste from previous posts of if it's an argument I've already debunked.

delop Wrote:You wont be calling projects stupid once you start flipping burgers for the rest of your life.

Quote:As much as you hate school, it's for your own good. Without a diploma you'll never get anywhere.

So you're saying that enduring 12 years of pointless hell just for a diploma is worth it? That's pretty sad. I guess you don't know there are better ways to get a diploma or the equivalent of one.

Quote:If you don't go to school you'll be on the streets begging for money from those who did.
See above. Also see list of people who dropped out but became "successful" anyway.

Quote:You cannot possibly hate school. School is the only source for you to have a good life and be rich.
There are so many things wrong with this statement I don't know where to begin. First of all, even if it were true that "School is the only source for you to have a good life and be rich", that doesn't make it impossible to hate it. People are perfectly capable of hating pretty much anything. Secondly, define a "good life"? You can have a good life without being rich, right? It depends on what you want to do with your life. Finally, school does not automatically guarantee that anyone will be rich. See this list of people who dropped out but became "successful" (by society's standards, anyway).

delop Wrote:Say that to the thousands of drop outs out there that regret it so much they would choose to live their lives again. Say that to the kids in africa who can't afford school. Seriously, school is a nice positive place and drop outs are just lazy kids who have no future.
I don't think those drop outs are the kind of person I am. I haven't yet seen a person just like me, hence I can't predict my future based on what happened to others. There are alternate ways of attaining your high school diploma (in the US anyway :jealous: )

delop Wrote:School can be very positive, but not if you go in there with a negative attitude. You will probably drop out, I can tell, especially from your use of words such as "dude" which only suggests that you're uneducated and have been damaged by pathetic use of the english language.
Overall, self-study is much more efficient.

And will everyone please putting such a strong emphasis on formal speech on an Internet forum? First things first-don't use ad hominem attacks. But here's the thing: there's absolutely nothing wrong with using slang.

To begin with, the vast majority of the world's population, including yours truly, has a language other than English as their native language. Even native English speakers might have learning disabilities. Conclusion: poor use of language might not be due to the the person's incompetence or lack of effort (lack of effort is discussed more in-depth below)

However, that's not the most important thing. What really matters is that using informal language, or making a typo is not some capital offence. As long as the post is readable (readable, not decipherable, as SoulRiser said elsewhere), the intent (communicating with others) has been achieved. Period. If people don't want to spend the time learning or applying grammatical rules or new vocabulary-so what? Why should they be forced to? Whatever happened to live and let live?

Dude (there, I said it), I could be a grammar Nazi too. I could point out your lack of capitalisation in the word "English", which is a proper noun. But I don't. Guess why? I value people's opinions, not the way they express them. I believe the thought is paramount to the form. This goes against what the consumerist society has taught us-don't care about the product, buy based on advertisements and packaging. But that's not what I want to do.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Should I also say it to the thousands of successful dropouts. And if I said it to the kids in africa, they would prolly ask me what the fuck a "burger" or a "McDonalds" is. Besides, what makes you think all these people want to go to school anyway. The school I go to, with it's rundown building, incompetent (or worse) teachers, and student violence, can not be a "nice, positive place". And i'm not even going to respond to the "lazy kids" comment, 'cause that's some of the most blatant trolling I have ever seen.

Re: Stupid projects.

Ah, our FAQ has a simply splendid counterargument to the "child in Africa" argument (just another version of the "think of the children" strawman argument)

Quote:You should be glad that you have schooling, what about the millions that don't?
Just because we have "more than others" does not mean we should just be satisfied with what we have and never aim to improve upon it. That's just pure laziness! Also, see above. Any advances made in countries that do have an education system can be passed along to the more disadvantaged countries. Blindly accepting things the way they are never made anything improve.

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

Re: Stupid projects.

I have a project due in every class.

2nd period is a algebra functions project, due the 26.
3rd period is a home economics planning project due early november.
4th period through 7th period is basically the same project in every class only a little bit different. All are due either the fourth or third of november.

So I have 6 projects due in the next two weeks and ive only finished one.
damn Im screwed.
