RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Life After Finishing School?

I'm interested in how people doing in life after finishing school.
They got a diploma or went through university or so, and are they happy with their life?
They have a job and yet they complain that "they're not rich"?

Did school help you anyway at all?
Are you practically back at square one in life after finishing school?

Re: Life After Finishing School?

Life after school pwns. The only thing I used my diploma for was getting into college... and the only thing I used college for was for making some seriously awesome friends... so I guess it was worth something after all (in a weird kind of way). Laugh
But yeah, qualification-wise, I haven't found a use for it yet. I'm not rich, but I get paid to do essentially nothing (as long as I keep my sites up and running), so I'm not complaining at all.

Re: Life After Finishing School?

Well, I don't mean to be the "downer" of this thread, but I want to answer the OP's question. I guess, that if I had to choose between what my life is now and what it was going to school, I'd still choose for it to stay the way it is now, although, I can't say that it "pwns." In my case it just phails softer than what life in school did.

Pros about ME being in school:
1. Have a reason to wake up every morning,
2 cheap lunch,
3 there would be some excitement every once in a while,
4 I was able to put my mind to great use in journalism and in writing essays (sometimes),
5 my 11th grade English teacher was nice and helped me out EVERYTIME I needed a dollar for lunch (which was a lot of times)

Cons about ME being in school:
1 Almost everyday I woke up it was to go to a lousy building to do some lousy work that I know for sure, for the most part, will never matter to me again,
2 lunch was shitty on some days,
3 while there was excitement sometimes, that was an exception, the rule was no excitement
4 Most people were morons
5 The rules got on my nerves
6 It seemed like a prison... kinda
7 It was involuntary labor for the most part
8 No field trips (for me, the average, yet certainly above average student)
9 Having pretty much no friends, school and especially senior year sucked for me. Everybody talking about college and moving on and shit, while I had no plans... and quite frankly didn't want to have plans
10 Report cards
and so on.

Pros about ME being a high school graduate:
1 No more involuntary labor
2 Get to stay home and watch tv, go on the internet, etc.
3 Manage to find a job that should be able to keep me employed and not piss poor for at least 3 months
4 Before the job, I was able to get out of bed whenever I felt fit
5 My life no longer revolves around school anymore

Cons about ME being a high school graduate:
1 I only started my new job yesterday, so before then, I basically had no life
1A. It sucks when you have no friends, now I hardly even have the opportunity to make any now, but even if I did, I'd probably be screwed because most people don't understand my need to not talk to people a lot of the time and therefore I come off as being unfriendly or not interested
1B. Having no life now, like, almost every damn dream I have is about school or about my past.
2 My mom's up my ass now more than ever about paying bills, getting a job, etc. (pfft, last week BEFORE I had the job, she was talking about kicking me out, now that I do have the job, she wants me to pay bills. Rolleyes Money hungry, amirite?)
3 There's hardly nothing to eat in my house most of the time. Sometimes I find myself envying my younger sister for going to school where they have a guaranteed meal for you at a cheap price.
4 Now, like at school, my life is pretty monotonous, just now, it's less inclined to be exciting.

But hell, I've only been out of school for around 5 months. I guess it could get better. My life would pretty much UNDOUBTEDLY be much better if I had more of what people call "social skills" and "people skills," but I don't so it's lame.

That is my life after high school.

Re: Life After Finishing School?

So far I started going to devry university and stay with my dad in texas..

Pros
We only meet twice a week and I do my classwork, tests and exams from home on laptop.
At school we have a game room where we can play xbox 360, playstation 3 and other game systems.
My teachers are totally not bitches like in high school.

Cons
I gotta wake up early to catch different city buses because my school is 40 minutes away and that means riding with ghetto looking people who I have to keep my eye on.

To tired to type anymore for now.

Re: Life After Finishing School?

I didn't finish school, so I can't really say anything. I'm going to anyway Biggrin.

Dropping out of TAFE (half-way between highschool and college/uni) is when I finished school. Since I dropped out, I've been doing basically nothing but sitting around on my ass (ok not really). Very awesome for me. I'm slowly securing passive income sources.

Epic win book.

Re: Life After Finishing School?

Does the end of school education affect your employment in any way?
How do you manage getting an income?

Is the negatives of finishing school not that severe?
