RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Starving for Time

This year my school cut back lunch time to 20 minutes. Our math teacher always teaches a couple minutes overboard. Lets say 3 minutes including walking to the bathrooms. Now we go to the bathrooms tht takes about 4 minutes. Now we go in to the lunch line and get food we are already sheduled to be the last class to come in for our grade. Now we only have about ten minutes to eat lunch. The time they took out of lunch is this stupid :( advisement thing where the lessons are always imcomplete and too short so we always read at the end.
Now my stomach always hurts during class. This is NOT helping me do good on tests.

HELP

Re: Starving for Time

We've always had 20 minutes lunch since elementary school. Hard on the intestines, but you get used to it.

10 minutes is plenty of time to eat a meal. You're stomach aches are more likely a result of poor diet. You could start to improve it by not eating the crap at your school.

You might also be getting stressed out, which can also cause stomach aches. Stress has this lovely habit of causing negative physical side effects, such as stomach aches.

Re: Starving for Time

20 Minutes? Seriously, WTF? If they make it that short, I wouldn't be suprised if the school decided to do away with the lunch period entirely.* With how long the lines are, or how long the line to the nearest McDonalds or corner store is here, no-one would be able to eat anything here during such a short lunch period.

*something a school I previously went to was actually considering. I left the next year, being in 8th grade and all, so there's no telling if they did it or not...

Re: Starving for Time

Wow, we get 45 minutes, plus two ten minute breaks, so it totals 65 minutes. It's plenty of time to eat and study.

Twenty minutes is way too little. I suggest you take this up with your administration. Read the handbook (yeah, I know US schools make them fairly thick to prevent students from being aware of their rights, but do read it) and find out who's responsible for addressing your concerns. Tell that dude exactly what you told us.

Re: Starving for Time

Just like other unfortunate people, my lunch period is 20 minutes, it was 30 tho. They let us have extra time to eat if we're really late or something. Good thing i'm usually there first and usually finished 7 minutes later! Smile

Re: Starving for Time

I've had 21 minutes precisely for lunch for my entire high school career. But, if you subtract time because of the gigantic lunch lines, you really only get like 10-15 minutes to eat.

Re: Starving for Time

We've got an entire period to eat (55 minutes) - which is good because I think without it I'd go mad.

Take it up with the administration though. That's rediculous. They should provide a reasonable amount of time for lunch. Ask around and see if you can get a bunch of other students to coomplain with you, and send around a petition. Just pass it around the lunchroom with a post it that says "Return to _your name here_". I'm sure you'll end up with most of the school signing it - if you can get enough signitures to start with.

Thats the problem with petitions. No one wants to sign it (in my district) because they feel like they'll get in trouble. Darn administration.

Puchiko was right about the handbook thing. There are a ton of interesting tid bits in there that you can use to argue your side. In fact, also check your districts website. I know my district has a TON of extra rules, procedures and laws that they have to follow posted on an obscure link on their site. It outlines the rules that even teachers and deans have to follow - so you might dig up extra information. And then, after all of that, continue searching the web for information about eating healthy and stuff. If you can find some research done on how long it takes to eat a meal, and any damaging side effects from wolfing it down too fast, they'll freak out and be more willing to change it. They wouldn't want to get sued. Wink

Re: Starving for Time

Lol, we only have 5 minutes to move from class to class, and that alone takes up all the time. No lunch-breaks.

Re: Starving for Time

take time to eat. If you're late, well fuck it you're late. Tell your parents that you need enough time to eat properly and that you will not stuff yourself with food just so you could make it to class on time. You should enjoy your meals. Consider your meals more important than classes.

Re: Starving for Time

Lol, we get 20 minutes to eat also. And, because I'm a freshman, I have to be at the back of the fucking line... The line has been so long that at times I've only had 3 minutes till lunch was over when I got my food. Recently I just decided to avoid the whole mess and just listen to music in the library.

Let us know if anything changes... seems like you're making a stand already, maybe the "Man" might listen for once.
