RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Check Out This "Teen Advice" List..

Quote: 1. It is a really bad idea, if things are bad at school because you are being harassed (sexually or otherwise) or bullied try changing schools rather than quitting.
2. It is so not worth it - if academics are hard for you see your school counsellor about a non-academic program, voluntarily set yourself back a grade, or get Learning Assistance (even if it is informally from a friend).
3. Drop outs have a harder time getting good, secure, decent paying jobs.
4. More and more entry level and trade specific jobs require a minimum of high school graduation.
5. Dropping out gives you a lot of free time, even if you get a full time job, you are more likely to get in to a self destructive rut including drugs and/or alcohol.
6. Pregnancy is not a good reason to drop out and get a job, look in to your options before taking such a drastic step (many schools and communities have programs designed to keep teens with children in school).
7. Being a drop out is much harder than you think it will be.
8. Going back to school as an adult is not as easy as you think it will be, and often costs you money - high school is free.
9. Contrary to popular belief 16 is not a magic age at which dropping out is OK - many states make it a civil crime to drop out before 18 and many have laws against truancy (unexplained absences from school).
10. Dropping out is not cool, it does not make you a tough guy, nor does it mean you are grown up or more mature - in fact it makes you the exact opposite of all these things.

I lol'd. My favorite reason on here is #5. DON'T DROP OUT, YOU'LL HAVE TO MUCH TIME ON YOUR HANDS. God forbid we have control of our lives...

I found this at: http://teenadvice.about.com/od/factshee ... ropout.htm

I can't find anything on my state's Dept. of Education website about the legal age required to drop out of school... Trying to find it on google...

meh.
I am a drop out, and I know I do have WAY to much time on my hands.
Granted, I fell into drugs and alcohol before that ever happened, so Idk if this would make anyone else do it.
xD

:-P
That is all.

I did not lol. I cringed. This 'advice' is clearly written from a biased and stereotyped viewpoint, and it's rather startling that having free-time is stereotypically bad.

Re: Check Out This "Teen Advice" List..

Anyone who tries to give teens advice, when the teen did not ask for it is a moron. This list of advice does not apply to the majority, and most of the assumptions made on it are rediculous and nonsensical.

Epic fail for the author.

I wouldn't be surprised if the author taught health class and posted on some sort of religious forums where they preached parents spying on their kids.

Yep, that made an assumption that the main reason people drop out because of image; to look cool or mature. That's pure ignorance. Teenagers need freedom and independence. Self-reliant and about time they drop out from a system that constantly bombards them with "It's good to listen to instructions..." Ga- ga. They want to do things their way. Now that's being mature, putting your life, mind, soul, and body in your hands.

I may have gotten over this by now, but I was shocked when I learned that everyone in one of the top universities on the planet (whatever that means) drinks and smokes (normally something other than tobacco) quite regularly.

Didn't surprise me that much. People need a outlet or they go insane. True fail to the author.. He deserves to be forcefed anti school videos for 38 hours straight.

This person didn't stop to think that the shitty school system is more likely to make someone do drugs than dropping out and letting them take control of their own lives. People aren't that stupid; they can choose what to do with their free time without doing shit.

So, like, I quite public high school when I was 16 (and since I lived in texas, that meant I was home-schooled by default!) and i've never done any illegal drugs and I've had like 3 drinks of alcohol ever.

I often wonder if people, when they do, intentionally misspell the "desert" part of my username, or if it's a genuine accident. I mean, it is kinda easy to put an extra s in there, but I wonder.
