RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

CRUSTACEANS OR WHATEVER HELP

So I got these questions. You know what to do.

1. List three general kinds of observations that Darwin made during the voyage of the Beagle.

2. Contrast Galapagos iguanas to South American iguanas.

3. What is an adaptation? Explain how the claws of the Galapagos and South American iguanas are adaptations.

4. How did Darwin explain why Galapagos species had different adaptations than similar South American species?

5. How does selective breeding support Darwin's hypothesis?

6. What is a variation? What is natural selection?

7. How do variation and natural selection work together to help cause evolution?

8. Suppose the climate in an area becomes much drier than it was before. What kinds of variations in the area's plants might be acted on by natural selection?

9-11. Needs the following chart:

INHERITANCE OF HAIR LENGTH IN CATS
H = short hair h = long hair
Eggs
h h
Sperm H | Hh| Hh|
h | hh| hh|

9. What are the genotypes of the offspring? What are their phenotypes?

10. What percentage of the offspring will have short hair? What percentage will have long hair?

11. Suppose the heterozygous short-haired cat parent were replaced with a homozygous short-haired cat. What would be the genotypes of the offspring? What would be their phenotypes?

12. Describe what occurs during the process of protein synthesis.

13. Why is messenger RNA necessary for protein synthesis?

14. Explain how you could determine whether the seeds ina packet of round pea seeds have the genotype RR or Rr, in which R represents round seeds and r represents wrinkled seeds.

Natural selection. If a certain trait increases the survival rate of an animal it is more likely to grow to adulthood and mate, thus passing this favored trait down in the gene pool.
6. What is a variation? What is natural selection?
Variation is just what it sounds like, variation of traits. Natural selection, seee above.
7. How do variation and natural selection work together to help cause evolution?
See no. 5
8. Suppose the climate in an area becomes much drier than it was before. What kinds of variations in the area's plants might be acted on by natural selection?
Plants that require less water would survive in the new habitat better and thus become 'favored' in traits. Natural selection would then kill off the less suited ones and after a while you only have a catus.

9-11. Needs the following chart:

INHERITANCE OF HAIR LENGTH IN CATS
H = short hair h = long hair
Eggs
h h
Sperm H | Hh| Hh|
h | hh| hh|

9. What are the genotypes of the offspring? What are their phenotypes?
Going clockwise from top left, [G= H, P= Hh], [G=H, P=Hh], [G=h, P=hh], [G=h, P=hh]
10. What percentage of the offspring will have short hair? What percentage will have long hair?
50% for both
11. Suppose the heterozygous short-haired cat parent were replaced with a homozygous short-haired cat. What would be the genotypes of the offspring? What would be their phenotypes?
All genotypes are short-hair, all phenotypes are Hh
12. Describe what occurs during the process of protein synthesis.

13. Why is messenger RNA necessary for protein synthesis?

14. Explain how you could determine whether the seeds in a packet of round pea seeds have the genotype RR or Rr, in which R represents round seeds and r represents wrinkled seeds.
Fucking plant them
Bolded is answers. I hold no responsibility if you get them wrong, bio was four years ago.

Whilst some work diligently there are those who ask why. I am one of them

This has been a test of the emergency pointless argument system. Had this been a real pointless argument, someone would have been called a facist.
