RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Unnecessary Hair Rules

This was posted on another forum, about a person ranting about their school's rules about hair. Take some time to read it, because you may find it intresting.

Quote:I just really wanted to share this.
It bugged me and drove me crazy today...

Okay, I always wear my hair in my face, it's just what I prefer,
I hate having my hair out of my face, and so my principle has
been hating my hair since I came to school, and every time I
came around and she saw me she would either, yell.
"Hair, hair, hair!" At me in till I moved my hair out of my face.
Or she'll grab the top of my head and push down on it, and
not lightly either, she'll push and it hurts.

So today, I was going to music (we have music on Fridays
in the morning) so I was walking and she grabs me right before
I get into the room and yells at me, "Hair hair hair!" so I move it
and start to walk in, and she grabs me again. She says, "No
that isn't enough, go down to the girls restroom and learn how
to part your hair!" So I go down, and I'm in the bathroom for
about 10 minutes (yes, I know how to part my hair I just didn't
feel like seeing her at that moment) and so I come out and
ask her politely, "Can you please stop touching my head? It
hurts," and she says to me, "Stop your back talking!" and I was
like... " ?? back talking?"

And then later, I let my hair go back into my face, because I
had just leaned over, and she at that moment walks into the
classroom, and she looks at me like she was about to throw
a fit... I'm just getting sick of her touching my head, and
telling me what to do with my hair, It's a free country, and
I can read just fine out of the eye that's covered with hair
but she insists I can't even when I prove I can.

I'm not looking for sympathy, you don't have to reply if you don't
want too, I just wanted to vent, and no, I know this is a stupid
reason to get upset, but it's just the fact that she insists I'm
back talking when I'm just asking her if she can stop touching
my head, and then on top of that, it hurts, and she doesn't seem
to realize that.

So, what does everyone think? Very unfair? The school is allowing actually yanking hair to where its out of the students' eyes. One day, if one of them did it hard enough, they could easily rip out a clump of hair. Opinions?

Actually apparently legal. According to the school system anyway.

Me too, but i believe she's in elementary/middle. Not really brave enough. And her parents even ignore her when she tries to tell them about the problem. I feel bad for her.

Re: Unnecessary Hair Rules

My high school had a rule that you had to shave. If you were caught with facial hair, they'd send you to the office to shave. I don't think anybody has ever resisted, but I guess you'd get a write-up for non-compliance.

Re: Unnecessary Hair Rules

Girl I take it? Hmm.

At my old schools you couldn't style it. For guys it couldn't go past your ears, get in your eyes, etc. No rat tails, pony tails and the like, incidentally only for white guys. Black guys could do whatever they felt like to their hair. No outlandish facial hair. Girls couldn't have hair past their breasts either.

If you infracted these rules, they actually sent you down to ROTC to get it lopped off. Oddly enough, Cheif Hendrin thought the rules were bull shit (she said this to my face too) , and need only apply to ROTC.

Re: Unnecessary Hair Rules

Harsh rules at your old schools. Its really unfair how far they take it. This girl wasn't even at a private school, where strict hair rules would be understandable. Chiisu, all i can say is " wow " to that. Total rasim right there.

Re: Unnecessary Hair Rules

Speaking of hair, there's this guy at my school who always had his hair in his face. Nobody says anything. But one day he put it back because the teacher told him to. I'm not sure but I saw him step out of the class with the teacher with his hair in his face and when he came back in, it was pulled back (and he NEVER does that).

Exactly.
At my high school they said it's a distraction. When I was in college, there were people with every color of hair imaginable, and revealing/wacky clothing. None of that was a distraction, or a big deal to anyone, and there was no dress code.

The real distraction is a teacher stopping in the middle of class just to embarrass someone by pointing out their hair/earings/shirt/pants/skirt/dick/jacket is breaking the dress code or something. It creates unnecessary stress for people, and honestly these rules are just immature. If I was a teacher I wouldn't care about that shit ... gimme a break. Some administrators need to grow the fuck up and quit acting like the kids they criticize.

i smell a LAWSUIT i would definitely sue this fascist bitch. i'll bet she goes to private school there is absolutely no way a public school principal would do this. even if it's private school its still child abuse and therefore a lawsuit could be filed.
