RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

They are even forcing us to work in factories?

Well,I'm usually just browsing and reading this forum but I really didn't find anything similar that they do to us in my country.

To start of,I could bare my elementary school, but when I got to high school, there is this really annoying thing that's making me feel stupid and unimportant retard.

It's complicated to explain, but I'll try my best.

Here,in Croatia (and probably some other European countries,I dunno...),our high schools are very different than those in America.
When you are signing in,you have to have some damn scores so they can get you in (like getting in college, but it's not like you can choose not to go).So because I barely had some scores,I got in the lamest high school (with retards and all),and it has to do something with textile, which I hate btw.

Well the point of this is,every week we have to go to the factory and work there for 6 hours. It's dirty, loud and full of dust.Sometimes they don't even let us sit.We have to pack things and do every other stuff workers do there, and we get no money at all. They say it's for educating us about responsibility and etc.
But I feel like a slave (How can I be responsible about it when no one even asked me if I wanted to be there in first place?).

Just imagine the situation, you are closed up in a factory with retards and have to work there A LOT while the teacher is controlling everything you do and if you just sit around then they are going to call your parents or you are going to end up with really bad grades (so I cannot transfer to another school).

It's killing me,my spirit and everything.I feel like shit, because the things that we do in that factory are for those who barely make any money (and I don't know who would want to work in that factory in the first place...)

I'd give anything so I can drop out.But I can't since I don't know for any alternatives here, and my parents would never let that happen.

That shit is making me tired every day so I can barely do things that I want to do.Now,since school is starting,I just feel so depressed about it.

Does anyone have anything similar like this?

Sounds like the book ANTHEM. The main character was forced to be a streetsweeper for not listening to his rulers. Also doing that without pay should be in violation of some international law

it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

WHAT THE FUCK? You serious? That's slavery right there, no joke. I lived in Europe the first 10 years of my life, I never heard of such thing.

Refuse to do your work. I'd just sit there and when they tell me to start working, I'd be like "fuck you". Who cares about your grades? Then maybe you can drop out. How can your parents allow that? And you don't even get payed. I thought I had it bad. And I wasn't aware of this kind of crap happening, it's 2009.

What the fuck. That's slavery any way you slice it. If I were you I'd just refuse to go to that bullshit.

Rebel. Protest.

The fact that slavery is still legal disgusts me.

"I heard a joke once. Man goes to doctor says "I'm terribly depressed". Doctor says "I know just what you should do. Poliacci the clown is in town, go see him, you'll be cheered right up." The man bursts into tears. "But Doctor, I am Poliacci." Funny joke. Roll on snare drum. Everyone laugh."

Do this. Just turn up, but sit around and do nothing, or read a book or something. It gets around truancy laws, so it should be perfectly legal, as long as you aren't 'disrupting' class.

Re: They are even forcing us to work in factories?

Wtf
Sounds like pure slavery to me. How many other people have to do the same stuff as you? Are they all OK with it? Maybe you can get more of them to refuse along with you. Actually, I think you could probably get the press interested in this... if Croatia's press isn't interested, try America or some other country.

Re: They are even forcing us to work in factories?

Well,I've got about 15 people working with me,but they seem just to listen what others tell them to do (which is really sad).

It's legal for high schools here to do it and other kids work in different places (as cosmetic salons, etc.),but they make us do that only in those "bad" schools (even if they are not considered so) and you will never find a single nerd there.

It's like bad students = give them bad work

I complained to my parents really seriously about it,but they just laugh it off (wtf?).

I would just sit and do nothing but man,my parents will kill me... (and I'll end up doing the same thing for the rest of my life?)

Well, you have two choices that I can see.

Defy your parents, or keep doing the work.

Re: They are even forcing us to work in factories?

You aren't getting paid to work, so that is essentially slavery. Even though high school isn't compulsory in your country, there is still an economic incentive to stay in school because those with only primary education are classified as unqualified workers by your government.

I have no idea what kind of rights you have in your country, but you should try to find out if this is legal. Secondary education is practically compulsory in your country because you won't be able to find a job without it. So it's almost as if you're being forced to work in a possibly unhealthy/dangerous environment (a factory wtf?) without payment. This is slavery.

If this is unusual in your country or at least to the rest of the EU, then you might try to contact a newspaper and get them to write a story about how secondary education students are forced to work in factories without pay.

Re: They are even forcing us to work in factories?

Your parents will kill you? They'll go to jail, then you won't be alive to be a slave anymore. That's great.

On a more serious note, just don't do the work. They won't kill you, they should be able to understand. Unless they're assholes...which they seem like they are. But don't worry. If your parents laugh it off, then FUCK THEM. This is making me mad.

do something sneaky that wont get noticed until later in the assembly line that will fuck everything up. Or just defy your parents and tell the teacher to go fuck a horse

Well I guess you guys are right.
I'll try my best and just gonna sit and do nothing.

Everyone, thank you for replying and your advices.Because if I'd tell about this to someone I know, they'd say "Well it's your fault, why didn't you study well in elementary?"

I'm still a kid, ffs, and I don't think that no one of us deserves this kind of punishment... :(

Can you document the situation? This could make a very compelling news segment or documentary. Is there any way you can take pictures or record video?

If nothing else, start daily journals. Write about what you experience. That'll help you develop your writing ability, and the resulting notes could be useful.

I would advice against just rebelling, and focus on documenting and finding a way to bring attention to the general issue. You might have seen the term "factory model schools" to describe the style of school many in the US have to go to, but wow... a literal factory...

Do you have an idea of what you'd like to do for work or for a career? What are your interests and so on? And... do you get a chance to pursue any of them?

Yeah, me too. It's hard to do remotely, though. It could help to find others who are in similar situations.

Maybe Mace, you could help with researching the issue? Who owns the factory, how widespread is this practice, is there any way to appeal your placement?

You might also consider finding alternative schools, and think about what you'll do when you get out of high school. If you can put together a plan before then, maybe learning online, just maybe you could get your parents to eventually let you out of school?

What's their vision for your future?
