RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

On the subject of Time

Okay, don't know about you guys, but our school starts at 8:45, finishes at 3:30. We get a 20 minute break and an hour for lunch. Decent, you might think. Well, not exactly.
Let's have some calculation here.
I dont know a single teacher that instead of letting you go at the bell, takes the bell as a time to pack up, wait for everyone to quiet down, stand up, tell us how we've done, then lets us push off. That's an average of 5 minutes every lesson. So if we have 2 breaks thats 50 minutes gone a week.
Detentions, of course. The average is 10 minutes for me, I never do much beyond talking. Maybe twice a week. Another 20 gone.
Getting to where you want to be in our massive school: 5-7 minutes each break. thats around 60 minutes gone.
Going to see teachers about work: This is a big one. The homework they give us is so friggin hard, and they insist on us coming to see them in our own time to talk to them about it, instead of in the lesson when it's meant to be. I must waste about 60 minutes every week on this...
Obviously theres more little things, but if we have 1 hr 20 mins a day, so 6 hrrs 40 minutes break a week, in all actuality we get 3 hrs 50... Anyone agree with me here?

Re: On the subject of Time

wow - i never actually bothered to work that out before. but you're right. and we also get kept behind inbetween lessons because the teacher before didnt let us off on time and we were late.

Re: On the subject of Time

I though we already had a thread for school schedules, but whatever.
So let's see...

doors open at 8:30
first class: 8:40 to 9:54
first break: 9:54 to 10:16
2nd class: 10:16 to 11:30
2nd break: 11:30 to 11:36
third class: 11:36 to 12:50
lunch break: 12:50 to 13:45
last class: 13:45 to 14:59

What bothers me the most though, is that even though the class periods here are ridiculously long (1 hour, 14 minutes), some teachers still can't fit it all in, and sometimes keep going past the bell...

And what's the point of having such a long break between the first two classes... If this whole "extended classes" experiment leaves so much negative space in the timetable, maybe just let us out at 2:45?

The only good signature is a dead signature.
