RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

why do people find a need to have some one above them

a prime example of this is god. without him most people would go nuts with uncertainty. but in a more worldly view even small villages needed a leader to govern and to tell them what them what to do.

the only reason i can think of is that theres a certain freedom to it. all you gota do is follow, no thinking of your own. thats why a kid at my school likes communism he doesnt feel like chooseing. said it be easy to let others choose.

life is just blah blah blah. we hope for blah, and sometimes we find it. but mostly its blah. and waiting for blah. and hoping you were right about the blahs you made. and when you think you just got the whole blah damn thing figured out, and your surrounded by the ones you blah. death shows up and blah blah blah.

People cant understand, so they make up bullshit. Like government, we don't really need it. Someone just made it because they felt every needed to be the same. I didn't read the whole thing cause your typing is shit.

Re: why do people find a need to have some one above them

I think everyone needs to have someone above them in atleast some part of their lives. think back to when you were a little tot. You needed someone to take care of you.

Now that you can make your own decisions and can mantain your own well being would be the time to assert independance,to bash with the vigor of that youthful spirit of yours (something your parents, the school, even the government envy).. This will fling you into a manhood, that few men reach.

Who am I? That is irrelevant.
What am I here for? That will become apparent.
You can call me Apathy!

I hate it when people try to force shit on you. Like for example, their religion. Everybody needs some sort of guidance, you have to crawl before you can walk. Someone helped you

Re: why do people find a need to have some one above them

I believe that it is part due to the fact that the human species are social in nature, and as such will seek to find a strong leader to lead them through harder times. We can, however, also develop independence, if our knowledge and self-esteem is high enough. So I guess you can say we do not always need some one above us, but the instinct of being some one's subordinate is, I believe, only human nature.

I don't see God as a some one "above" us though. God an religion is an excuse that humans make to escape the tragic reality of life. We try to please some one by making our lives meaningfull, and hoping that the God we have placed above us will ease our suffering. So in a way God is an involuntary "leader" because man has put him in a position that leaves him to lead us, so that we can feel good about living our lives.

Re: why do people find a need to have some one above them

well at first i took this question a bit differantly. anyway i guess to the way it was meant; maybe there are just "leaders" and "followers" i mean, usually thats one of the things id dismiss as total bull and say that everyone can lead if they want to and stop being lazy or whatever, but i thinkk some ppl truly are ok with following others, and some arent, and like to lead, and some just like to be alone, and really theres nothing wrong with that.

anyway the way i origianally took it was like, for instance for me, i always like to be friends with people who are "above" me, or at least equel. i know that sounds arrogant or bad or whatever, but i just mean that i like to have people i can get along with, or learn from, thats not to say that im not friends with ppl who arent above me (not beneath me, just like differant, or not better at me than at most things, and perhaps a bit more socially akward...ok im sounding pretty popous arent i?) wtvr, anyway i dont like following anyone really, but i still like knowing ppl above me in a sense becuaes then how would i better myself? i mean you can better yourself without ppl to learn from, but its a heck of a lot easier sometimes...

i am me myself and i
we are very much the same
different types of entities
under one single name

Carla Franklin has never denied that on the afternoon of the third of August 2006 she raped and killed sixteen children celebrating their friend's fifth birthday and forced their parents to share a dinner of their remains.

Re: why do people find a need to have some one above them

Actually god is more of something that was made up to explain the unexplainable...

I don't know if humans have the innate desire to glorify themselves or enslave themselves. We say god made us to be the best on earth, and the most special. We also happen to strive to be in control, and to become the most powerful.

I would say, we'd rather be in control than give control, UNLESS, we clearly cannot control something, and it would be beneficial to ourselves.

Yes, I am bumping a lot of threads, I would actually like to discuss it mkay?

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

Re: why do people find a need to have some one above them

I think people need the idea of an imaginary Friend (God) for psychological comfort. It's not really that bad. We won't know if that God exists or not anyway so might as well try to hope as if It really exists. If you think about it, we really don't need the concept of God for the Golden Rule to be applied universally. I think the imaginary Friend = our psychological being (soul). Like, we need It for our comfort when we feel hopeless, and at the same time from this branches out our emotional wiring for morality. (Golden Rule).

As for people on earth wanting some kind of authority to rule over them, I honestly think it's Temperament. According to Keirsey, there's a temperament that is very socially minded above all= the Guardians. Guardians are content with reality, are practical, and so more than any other temperament, tend to follow the workings of the world rather than to critically question it. Therefore, they also tend to follow the authority, the rules and such more so than any other temperament.

I think it boils down to, some people are just content with reality, rather than actively speculating about it with passion and trying to change it.
