RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Purpose of admins & moderators

Admins and moderators are here to move posts to the most appropriate forum when needed and to do other menial forum cleaning tasks. They are basically like forum cleaners... they are not supposed to be 'role models' or 'post quality control' or something like that. If you want role models, try to BE one yourself.

Ideally, moderators will get picked because they are active and likely to spot things that need to be moved. Though, sometimes they have been picked just 'cause they've shown themselves to be particularly intelligent even if they don't post all that much. This may have contributed to the confusion. Sorry 'bout that. It's just that we never really had another way to "recognize" role models other than to make them moderators.

Moderators and admins are also not here to protect anyone's feelings from being hurt by other members, because that is pretty much impossible and it would only be holding people back from becoming stronger on their own. The only possible exception to this is the Voices in Your Head forum. We may actually split or move posts that hurt people's feelings out of there. But only in really extreme cases, like if the person is really really depressed or sensitive at the time.

RE: Purpose of admins & moderators

being a mod on this site is fun though, because the group dynamic changes so much as opposed to the expected deuchbaggery of 4chan and the mostly hivemind of reddit. Depending on the nature of your thread and where it is posted people will change how they act towards you.

And it doesn't hurt that it is pretty hard to get banned or even have yourr post removed.

The less you try to control things, the less you need to.

Brainiac, I don't think you are deserving of a crown and hammer like mine.

See Example 1

And Sub, the spam on this site has been destroyed to pretty much nonexistant, so it actually wouldn't be terrible to be a mod since there are really only guidelines and not any super official rules

Purpose of admins & moderators

To be honest, I think I could make a good moderator, if only in the Geography of SS section so I could run it more efficiently.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

The Mod Delusion

Starring Heil_Kaiba8921, MrJurgens, brainiac3397, SubCulture, and Chanku

Edit: Allow me to make a point that goes further than a simple quip.

SoulRiser isn't looking for mods; that is because we do not need them at the moment. Spam's under control, most of us are smart enough not to put threads in the wrong forums, and the trolling is the least serious it's ever been in recent history. If she says she can handle this herself, she can handle this herself.

And to the couple of you that romanticize the idea of being a moderator, be very ashamed of yourselves. Assuming the situation were that Soul needed to recruit some mods, that would no doubt mean that the responsibility would far outweigh the power. There are some of us who might do well, but not a single person who would think to misuse the position really deserves it.

Hey, the very reason I don't want to be a mod is because of that power. But, I would be a good one, because I want to put everything in the right place, and my general additude of "I don't like what you said, but you have a right to say it."

This is actually how I am regardless of how I've been acting as a fake mod.

I was a mod on my old Star Wars BF2 clan forums and it didn't make me power hungry.

Why can't people joke around and call themselves a mod without being labelled power hungry idiots?

Did I ask if she was looking for mods? No.

How do you know we'd go power hungry? I don't think you know the answer to that.

Am I looking to misuse moderation/admin privileges? Not at the slightest.

You don't know the outcomes of anyone becoming a mod/admin. I'm just saying I'd love to someday, that's all. Nothing more, nothing less. If this forum gets a boost of activity in the future, and more school apologists show up, I'm definitely going to step-up to the plate so that I can help SR manage the forum.

Don't make this out as something bad, because it's not. Did you have any bad experiences with mods in the past? I sure have, but I wouldn't never repeat the cycle of blatant favoritism and censorship ala SWTOR forums.

Seven crappy hours of our lives.

What if you accidentally on purpose accidentally banned yourself...on accident before you banned everyone else on purpose accidentally?

Them Ill be damned.

Eh. If I was going to ban myself anyway, Itd still be amusing to ban myself first by accident.

Purpose of admins & moderators

I theorize that Chanku, SubCulture and I would make decent moderators, think that Kaiba and Jurgens might make decent moderators, and assert that braniac would be a terrible moderator no matter how you spin it.

Of all of the "candidates" for moderatorship, the best by far would have to be SoulRiser. I guess that's why we only have one mod, then...

Sure...Blame the crazy guy. For your information, being half-wannabe machine leaves me capable of making logical and unbiased decisions regardless of morals and ethics. You all just fear the machine...
