RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The 50 year old woman.

This woman enrolled in my university. Based on what i heard, she enrolled because she realized that school is important.
I think she's just wasting her time. Uhoh

Senility does strange things.

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Re: The 50 year old woman.

The sad part is that she will most probably remember this period as pleasant because

1. she's just another brainwashed one who believes the only places in the world truly meant for learning are schools / universities.
2. she'll have a preferential treatment, because most professors will view her as an equal due to her age (if she were of a student's age, she would be "less" equal Rolleyes )

Re: The 50 year old woman.

There are plenty of older people in university. Some people like to take classes at the university for fun.

And by older, I mean up to 70 years old. It's not that uncommon.

What should Gaiyara do Onii-chan? ♡

Or just to creep people out.

In Dallas they just made it possible for people up to 25 to enroll in high school. Hmmmm.

Yeah, as she's got the right to do that, as it's her education. After all.

*cough* I mean "education". *cough*

Re: The 50 year old woman.

Honestly, it's probably good for her to go to university, simply because getting an education is a great thing. My own father is planning to go back to school and getting a job in the IT field after being a soldier for close to thirty years. While I don't believe college or university is the best way to educate oneself, it does educate people. And it shows people that you know your shit when you apply for a job. I wish there were some way to just learn at your own pace, on your own time, and get some sort of certification to prove you know your shit.

Also, for the record, I would like to say that schools do educate. However, in many cases, they only provide the bare essentials and have no opportunities for expanding horizons beyond what the school offers. It's a criminally inefficient model and needs to be changed, but it does educate, if only a little.

I don't see anything wrong with going to a university, the problem is people are being forced to go to school.

why not, i could see life geting extremely boring at that age.

my folks are in college but mostly to get higher pay in there jobs. tell you the truth it sickens me.

life is just blah blah blah. we hope for blah, and sometimes we find it. but mostly its blah. and waiting for blah. and hoping you were right about the blahs you made. and when you think you just got the whole blah damn thing figured out, and your surrounded by the ones you blah. death shows up and blah blah blah.
