RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

A letter that describes our government/education perfectly

Dear Adbusters,

Ten years after 9/11 I find myself thinking more and more about that day and what has happened because of it.

We watched the whole thing on the old television in the classroom, my classmates either crying hysterically or frozen in fear. As I stared sullenly into that old screen, I realized nothing would ever be the same again. My teacher was at a loss for words but tried to reassure us that we were all safe. As the years have passed I have come to see that she could not have been more wrong.

The epiphany came for me in an American History class at the Bible Belt college I attended. The instructor said in her southern drawl that terrorists attack America not because they have a legitimate ideological statement to make but because they are jealous of our freedoms.

I laughed in disbelief.

What freedoms was she referring to? The freedom to spend my life away? The freedom to live in a society that seems to be more terrified of itself every day? The freedom to be subjugated by a government that murders ruthlessly around the world with predator drones and makes it illegal to even question its actions?

Right after that laugh I was expelled from the classroom and told that I could come back only when I was prepared to learn. Just as I walked out the door I turned back to look at my classmates. I saw the same fear in their faces that I had seen nearly a decade earlier.

I never went back.

The above is a letter from this Adbusters magazine I found in the computer lab at, ironically, school Biggrin So maybe I exaggerated a bit on the thread title, but it's certainly true. What do you think of the letter?

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

Re: A letter that describes our government/education perfectly

Noo. The Arabs are gonna kill us all! They're gonna take our freedoms!
This is one of those things, honestly, that are hard for me to think about. It's a bit absurd that the terrorists attack us because we are "jealous of our freedoms". We have definitely been losing freedom since the 9/11 shit.
The teacher said "we were all going to be safe"... Why is it she couldn't have been more wrong? Isn't this more about freedom than safety, with all this maximum control bullshit? Or is the writer implying that we're all gonna be nuked to death? Or does the author mean "intellectual/free will safety" or some shit?

The letter writer probably meant the teacher was wrong about being safe, but about mental safety rather than physical (the latter being what the teacher meant, about nukes and stuff) because we're no longer safe in our freedoms. Our freedom is not safe, it's being threatened by the government....in the name of safety.

America is being told by the government that outside threats, like from the middle east, are the only things that can threaten their safety. The thing is, as they warn us of threats on our physical safety, they're the ones taking away the safety of our freedom.

*reads over what I wrote* that was a total mindfuck.

Not illegal, they'll just threaten you with nuclear warfare.

War is stupid.

Humanity, fuck yeah!

Nothing is perfect, I guess :\
Meh. Even though there has always and will always be totalitarian bullshit, I guess we just gotta keep trying to improve shit.
