RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

STOP! Grammartime [PLEASE READ!]

No tl;dr are allowed. OK? This is a guide to good grammar and should be applied to your posts to some extent. Please note rules one, nine, three, and five. Thankyou.

This will make everyone's lives a lot easier.

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
N00b Edition, by Hikari

It is customary in most latin languages to write in sentences. The following diagram illustrates sentences.

1 This is a capital letter. These are used to denote the beginning of a sentence.
2. The word grammar is a non-capital noun (a common name applied to several things. Not denoted with a capital letter).
3. This is a comma. Not to be confused with a full stop, it is used when a natural pause should be added when reading, to add effect and inhale.
4. This is a clause. It comes in the middle of a sentence to add extra detail.
5. The word English is a capital noun (A name given to a very specific thing, usually a country, a person, or a language).
6. Refer to 4
7. The word sit is a verb (a doing word). These are commonly paired with an adverb (a word describing a verb) to add detail.
8. The word ugly is an adjective (A describing word). These are used to add detail, and are a staple in describing things.
9. At the end of this sentence is a full stop or period. These, or another similar symbol such as a question mark, should be added to the end of all sentences, without exception. NEVER LEAVE A SENTENCE OPEN ENDED!

Other things to remember - Quotes

If you are quoting somebody out of context and the quote is unclear, add any extra details in brackets ([ and ])
Part of this rule is the [sic] notation, which is used to denote a mistake in a quote. The following quote illustates both of these concepts.

"It [The curry]was vry [sic] good, my man."

These are mostly used in essays and debates, as when writing fiction you can change these, as it is your right. But when you are quoting someone else, it is extremely bad manners to change what they have said.

I'll add more to this later... but nobody has ANY excuse to have bad grammar now.

Why must I end all sentences with a period.

"Do we treat straight public sex differently than we do gay public sex? Of course. Straight people are so proud of their public sex that they named a cocktail after it."

While I agree with this, I hate it when some people post about something, and they have less-than-stellar grammar, and half of the forum just rapes them and completely disregards and derails the topic. Most of these posts are still understandable despite having not that great grammar.

Quoted for mutherfucking truth. This isn't school, so we don't need to correct everybody's grammar.

Re: STOP! Grammartime [PLEASE READ!]

For goodness' sake, classclown... I agree with 5 and MM that grammarwhoring is bad, but that's why I made the topic; So people can read this, take it in, and get on with their lives.

I am going to make an exception for this topic though. Classclown, I had you and a couple of other posters in mind when I made that topic, because it's tiring to read through a million posts written like that. So at least try to take some in? Like, the ending a sentence with punctuation bit? And the start with a capital letter bit? As bare basics? :3

RE: STOP! Grammartime [PLEASE READ!]

Considering l'm participating in a site that despises conformity, all your thread has made me want to do is deliberately post grammatically shite sentences just to annoy people like you. You know, in my country, people in a particular area threw rubbish INTO bins, until the government put up signs saying "YOU BETTER PUT YOUR RUBBISH INTO YOUR BINS OR ELSE...!" and everyone started throwing rubbish AROUND the bins.

That's what l feel like doing. l HATE being forced to do something simply "because". Or even provoked in a threatening way. Also, the people who will make an effort to post coherent grammatically correct sentences will continue to do so and those who don't, will not. Your efforts of this thread won't really amount to anything unless you threaten them with legal law threats that may affect them in real life.
