RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Heya: Your local math-dimwit here come for some help

Howdy.

Help with these two, please?

....I'm 17, currently a junior in an IB college prep high school, and both of these 'simple' word problems are giving me a headache. This is like, what, pre-algebraic stuff? Pathetic.

I do have to place the blame, however, upon the schools/mathematics classes that I have been in:

From the confession's topic:

Here are the little buggers:

Re: Heya: Your local math-dimwit here come for some help

Basically, you just write down a bunch of equations.

There are 50 coins.
x + y + z = 50
They add up to 120 cents
x + 2y + 5z = 120
There are twice as many 2-cent coins as 1-cent coins.
2x = y

Then you can solve. Since y= 2x, you can replace it in the other equations.

x + 2(2x) + 5z = 120
5x + 5z = 120
x + z = 24

x + 2x + z = 50
3x + z = 50

Now it's probably easiest to solve for z in terms of x.

z = 24 - x

z = 50 - 3x

Now, since they both equal z, they also equal each other.

50 - 3x = 24 - x
26 = 2x
x = 13

So there are 13 1-cent coins. It's pretty easy to find the 2-cent coins now, because there are twice as many.

2(13) = y
26 = y

Now use one of the original equations to solve for z. (Can really be anything at this point as long as it includes z.)

13 + 26 + z = 50
z = 50 - 39
z = 11

The next one's simpler.

There are 50 stamps.
x + y = 50
Their total value is 202 cents.
2x + 5y = 202

Just solve each for y in terms of x.

y = 50 - x

5y = 202 - 2x
y = (202 - 2x) /5

Now put them together again.

(202 - 2x)/ 5 = 50 - x
202 - 2x = 250 - 5x
3x = 48
x = 16

Done, but you can still solve for y if you want to check.

16 + y = 50
y = 34

16(2) + 34(5) = 32 + 170 = 202 , so it works.

OH, that is what I was doing wrong in problem two.

Damn distributive property, or whatever.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, thank you magikarp. Wish my math studies teacher could explain the process in as simple terms as you have.

1. Lisa is a fictional character on the Simpsons, and therefor does not have ANY money. So the answers are 0.
2. Steve was recently robbed at gun point, so he has no money. Even worse: He died.

No

But yeah, those are the answers.
