RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

That sucks. It's probably a false positive due to you being anti school. Read The great ADD hoax.

My 6th grade homeroom teacher, a person with no medical training at all, diagnosed me with ASSBURGER Aspberger's Syndrome. That was back when I still believed the bullshit like that they forced down my throat. SO FUCKING WHAT IF I'M DIFFERENT?! That does NOT give you the right to diagnose me with mystical BULLFUCKINGSHIT mental "disorders"! Now shut up and go suck a dick.

Ive read about the hoax and I agree with mostly all of it

Hidden stuff:
TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

I will call bullshit to when any school says a student has ADHD/ADD.

"I heard a joke once. Man goes to doctor says "I'm terribly depressed". Doctor says "I know just what you should do. Poliacci the clown is in town, go see him, you'll be cheered right up." The man bursts into tears. "But Doctor, I am Poliacci." Funny joke. Roll on snare drum. Everyone laugh."

Re: my school says im positive for ADHD

Well, Freak beat me to it. I've been studying psychology for a while now (I've already outrun Uni level Biggrin) and it's a very one sided argument. There's about three professionals still arguing that ADD/ADHD is really a disorder, hell they're the only ones that think it exists at all. The other professionals are coming up with very convincing arguments that make a lot of sense. The only reason "ADD/ADHD" is still diagnosed is to simplify things. So if people ever push it just call them bullshit artists.

Also, VG Cats is so awesome Biggrin

Don't take the Ritalin. They're not treating you for ADHD, they're treating you for a PERSONALITY.
There's nothing fucking wrong with you.
My mother told me that when I was little, she and my dad were talking to another couple of parents. I was running around and being my own hyper self, and one of the parents said, 'She's really hyper. You might want to get her checked out for ADD...'
My mom said that my dad had never been so publicly angry. He stood up for me, which makes me feel really smiley inside. Thank GOD I wasn't fed none of that shit (Ritalin AND all of the bullshit they TELL you about the 'disease') when I was little, I'd be a depressive cutting emo child now if I had been.

Carla Franklin may be a whore. She may be a wonderful, kind, moral woman. Seeing as I don't know her personally, I cannot know for sure. However, I find her actions (suing Google, requesting the personal info of her critics, getting angry over random internet idiocy that she should ignore and be bigger than, trying to get this site in trouble because of a few users' commentary on the situation, etc.) pretty ridiculous and unwarranted. If she didn't want people to to be talking about/judging her, well 1. that's impossible, she's a human, and 2. she shouldn't have been a model or agreed to be on film. AND 3. she DEFINITELY shouldn't have sued Google and made all this fuss over a few random idiots whom she probably won't ever know expressing their opinion. Mmkay? MMKAY.

Don't listen to them, those psychologists can cram their papers up their ass.
Firsts things first DON'T let them run your life and change to who YOU DON'T want to be.
Another thing is you can pretend your cured or end up not going to see them anymore.

Re: my school says im positive for ADHD

ADHD isn't a myth. Some people really do have problems with inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere significantly with their life.

Interpreting those things only as a disorder, is questionable -- they can be interpreted as personality or temperament, but when the problems are really severe, it can be useful to think of it as a disorder (or something along those lines.)

I think the problem you're all addressing is when the ADHD label (and medication) is pushed on students primarily because they fail to conform to the expectations of school. That should be fought. But when these symptoms actually get in the way of a person doing what THEY want to do, interfering with their life, then there IS a legitimate problem that should be analyized, researched, and treated in the way the person sees fit.

Traditionally, before the ADHD label someone with these symptoms would be thought of purely as misbehaving or lazy. The concept of ADHD is, in many ways, a step above that because it recognizes that these difficulties can be very unintentional and severe in some people.

Positively. But if an individual is noticing that they can't sit still or do what they want, let the INDIVIDUAL, not necessarily teachers or parents, ask their doctors about it.
All of this diagnosing 5 year olds and giving them what's basically crack with a PG rating is F'd up.

Congratulations humanity, because you refuse to let go of the old and evolve you actually make people believe in 2012. Not only that, but you're the only species on Earth that were able to make it possible, now we get to sit until we die because we couldn't get to Mars. We have failed as a society and don't deserve our gifts to survive for this long.
