RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hypocrisy...

Okay, my geography teacher has issues.

Another girl was brought into our classroom because she had been passing notes; He gave her a look of complete hatred and told her to sit down. She said she hadn't done it, and he simply told her nobody cared what she had to say and didn't respond to her for the rest of the lesson.

If she had pressed this matter, she would have been excluded due to the school rule that if you challenge a teacher it is 'defiance' (Their wording! Not mine!) and that is a punishable offence.

He is the reason I am quitting Geography. I hate him with a vengeance. Another example: I put my hand up to inform him I had missed last week's lessons, and he said 'What do you want me to do, put up a flag?' and offered me no help whatsoever, just left me with no idea what we were doing/ Nobody else was allowed to tell me, because we have to work in silence.

But, here's the ironic thing; If any of US spoke to a fellow pupil like that we would almost certainly get sent to the headteacher. Spoke to a teacher like that, we would have been permanently excluded.

I'm disappointed in our Geography department. Sarah's class are making a national park out of paper mache, and we have to write an essay on the Lake District.

I sincerely hope I never have to talk to him again after this year.

Re: Hypocrisy...

He sounds like a real dick. Is there any way you can report him to the school head or something? It's his job to put you in the best position possable to learn, even if the stuff is pointless, and you obviously can't learn (and by learn I mean memorise pointless crap) shit if he refuses to help catch you up.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Re: Hypocrisy...

Our school won't do anything; In a vote on whether to change the type of forms we had, they changed all the 'maybes' to 'yes' and said they'd had a unanimous vote, even though at least I voted 'no'.

And 19/20 people voted to ban name-tags, so they tightened security and wouldn't let you in school at break/lunch unless you were wearing one.

Re: Hypocrisy...

Is this the maths teacher who evryone hates? Our school justice system amazes me. I djust fail to see why teachers are worthy more than pupils.

"The irrationality of a thing is no argument against its existence, rather a condition of it."

-Ben Franklin

"when I was a kid I used to pray for a bicycle. then I realized that god doesn't work that way. so I stole one and prayed for forgiveness."
"I would rather die for something I believe in than live for anything else."
"What is the task of higher education? To make a man into a machine. What are the means employed? He is taught how to suffer being bored." – F W Nietzsche

Re: Hypocrisy...

He sounds awful.

Maybe what you should do is send him an anonymous e-mail. Don't be an ass with what you write, but explain to him what he is doing. Explain that he's unduely nasty on a regular basis, unhelpful, and that you find his class uninspiring. Use examples, and perhaps point out things that the other classes are doing that you would like to do.

Don't send it right away, either. Wait a few days, reread over it a few times, edit it to your liking, and then, when you think it's perfect, send it to him and blind copy it to his department head. Be sure to write in a professional manner, and don't swear, unless you're quoting him.

Sometimes, people like that don't have a good idea of what they're doing. Most of the time, they do, but not always. Alerting him and his boss to his problem will do more good than just dropping the class alone. When you leave the class, you leave another poor 20 students in there to deal with him. And chances are, those students don't know better than to deal with it. Make an attempt to save them. Send the e-mail.

Also, forward his response to his boss as well. The best thing you can do is alert his supervisor to the problem. People who work in a learning enviornment do, deep down, have the interest of the students at heart (even if they go about expressing it in the wrong way), and have extreme interest in what goes on in classrooms when they are not around. Bring this matter to their attention, and you may see a change.

If you're brave enough, sign your name. It's brings an element of personal-ness to the whole matter, and his boss will respect you more than if you just leave it annonymous. But, I know that takes guts, so, don't be afraid to not sign it. After all, it's the message that's important, not the name attatched to it.

It is better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. - Neal Vitale
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints. The sinners are much more fun.
Everyone can back up their opinions. Some people just do it a whole lot better than others. - Rebelnerd
Here's to the men and women who did what was considered wrong, in order to do what they knew was right.
