what i don't get is why we have to write resreach papers. [IT'S JUST BUSY WORK. and who cares about them. all the shit that you have to do with them is freakn pointless and we will probaly never use that shit in when we get out of high school.
if i had one day to sit down and talk to whom ever is in chrage with the stuff that we learn today i would ask them so many questions and put them in their freakn place. because about most of the stuff that we so called have to learn is STUFF that we will never use in the outside world. i bet that if you talked to half or more than half of people that already graduated and asked them if they used any of the stuff that they learn in school they would say NO
now that i think about it they have been teaching the same shit over and over sense elementray!
the only thing that i am happy i went to school for ishow to spell read write and count thats about it.
all that other shit that we have to go to skol for is [color=#80FFBF]STUPID!

I actually see writing research papers as one of the better uses of time during school. For the people who do not regularly post on forums and do not do the writing that many of us do in our spare time, it's good practice. Writing exercises several parts of your mind at once, I think. It leads to higher thinking, and practice in writing things that other people can actually read are good.

So, while the topic that the essay is on may be a complete and UTTER waste of time, the writing practice is good. I do wish that they would let us pick a topic we actually care about though. I hate this "you must clear your topic with me first" BS that they give us.

I think writing in general is a decent use of time. It helps me to clarify my thoughts, and to focus my attention on an idea longer than I would if I were just thinking about it. It's also nice to be able to write somewhat understandably when needed.

Still, I don't think research papers are necessarily the best way to practice. At least in high school, they hardly have a purpose--if you were writing to better understand a topic, you could write more informally and in nearly any format, and if you were writing for someone else, you'd likely want to emphasize explanation instead of summarizing facts that can be found easily. I do think it'd help to try out writing for different purposes, but I think it's better practice if it's a 'real' purpose because then what you need to do isn't oversimplified like it often is with writing assignments. (Instead of being told a format and being expected to write in some general tone, you use whatever works best, which is less straightforward.)

Maybe it's best to practice primarily the types of writing you plan on actually using. I dunno.
