RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

What has been your main source of knowledge?
I'm not ruling school out, but I doubt we've learned anything their.
I'd have to say my main source of knowledge has been Punk, books, and film. Punk inspired me to dig deeper into the world around me and explore things that society said were forbidden. I guess I'd say crust punk and like the hardcore stuff really opened my mind. If it wasn't for punk I wouldn't know what capitalism, communism, history, and people in what's really going on in general, unlike the majority of people my age.
Books, even though it's hard for me to find a book that actually interests me, reading has always been a very great experience for me. It just stimulates my entire mind, and jolts my creativity and imagination. Also a mind expanding form like listening to music.
Film, because being able to see stories and being acted out is just a great way to learn. Mainly through documentaries and things based off of true events. I watch a lot of independent films, but I still are very engaging. The artsy films inspire independent thinking and leave you always musing over the general message.
I also learned alot through asking teachers things outside of the classroom. That's where I think they are at their strongest.
What about you guys?
Also, I'm happy to say that school just numbed me, and made me very uninterested in education, or anything that is.
To be an anarchist, is to suffer greatly. To be a black woman is to suffer secretly. To be the earth, is to suffer silently.
I wish no harm on anyone, but those whose harmful ways will not stop without the same harm.
It's time we kill this cancerous system, before it kills us and everything left of gaia. Rise from our immaturity and take back our autonomy!

The internet, and just silently observing people. Those two things taught me more useful stuff than everything else combined.

Re: What has been your main source of knowledge?
Books, wikipedia, and reputed sources that don't fall down after a bit more research. I learned everything I wanted to from books, forbidden subjects come from wikipedia and other reputable sources
(I trust wikipedia more than most sources)

Re: What has been your main source of knowledge?
From when I could read, from about 15, I did start to read fiction at first, but then went towards factual books. I still read fiction to this day. Before that, audiobooks. FUCK YEAH AUDIOBOOKS. Go to sleep playing one in your ears, and you'll wake up with the entire book memorised.
Also, internet. Without it, I wouldn't be able to refine my reading techniques. Reading brings knowledge, and with knowledge comes power.
So, books and internet, pretty much like everyone else here.

Re: What has been your main source of knowledge?
Internet, with it I can read things that interest me and mainly my logic (no show off intended), it's just that I come to TONS of conclusions, most of them don't even matter to someone not thinking deep and I forget them really fast anyway but yeah..

Re: What has been your main source of knowledge?
Internet when I actually bother to read things, talking with people, my parents... And yeah. School. I learned a lot of crap about history in World History, as well as math. Oh, and the internet for all the computer programming and 3D modeling, as well as some music knowledge (things about playing guitar, metal...).

RE: What has been your main source of knowledge?
Personal research on what I'm interested in. I get inspired and look whatever I get inspired by on the Internet. School hasn't taught me anything. Also parents and, believe or not, many videogames.
The world is a dangerous place. Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don't do anything about it.

Internet, books, nature, public radio, my family, people in general, and a little bit of school. Church taught me about how fucked up Christianity.

school is my main source of knowledge
More seriously though, most of the math and shit I've learned has been in school, music I've learned through myself/the internet/my music teachers, computer programming through books and the internet, and I stopped respecting Christianity thanks to metal and SS.
