RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Ubuntu 11.04 kind of sucks.

I'd suggest steering clear for a few months. Don't upgrade. It's buggy, and the UI is a pain in the dick. You can select "Classic" at the login screen, but shit's still slower than it used to be, and it's buggy as hell. Customization is less than flexible and every time I open a "heavy" application, the app fucking crashes.

I'm going to install another interface on top of 11.04 till they fix this retarded shit.

Re: Ubuntu 11.04 kind of sucks.

I heard it was a love it or hate it kind of thing.

Luckily I've got the previous version on my spare partition. :troll:

The thing I hate the most is that when I try to open rhythmbox, it fucking closes right away. It would be more bearable if that didn't happen. I prefer the older version though.

I was gonna install xubuntu-desktop but meh. Gnome works fairly enough for me. But yeah, I've found a few bugs.

Re: Ubuntu 11.04 kind of sucks.

I've got Lubuntu 10.10 on my tiny lil netbook and it runs great. Was considering updating to 11.04 but I think I'll wait a bit 'cause I just got everything set up all nice and whatever. Lubuntu is basically much faster than Ubuntu or the netbook remix edition. I've only got 512MB of RAM and I don't even need a swap partition. I've never seen it actually use more than 200MB.

Alright, I want to convert to using a linux based system, and I'm thinking about getting ubuntu. At the moment, I only have 1GB of RAM and windows takes up half of that shit, due to RAM problems I can only run WoW for about a minute then it shuts down due to lack of memory. I heard that I could run it using WINE.

Is there anything I should know before downloading it and what not? Like drivers? I know when I had to reinstall windows I had to put my Ethernet drivers on a memory stick. Or will the drivers remain on my comp?

Shouldn't have that much of a problem with drivers... I usually don't. Depends on what kind of system your running. Try ubuntu on the CD before you install it, and that should give you an answer. It'll be a lot slower on the CD then when you install it, so don't use the CD to measure speed. Wine should work with WoW if your computer is supposed to be able to run it... 1gig should be fine...

If wireless doesn't work, just post here again and one of us will tell you how to get it working. Putting drivers on a flash stick probably won't be necessary.

Re: Ubuntu 11.04 kind of sucks.

Most things tend to just magically work in Ubuntu (Lubuntu included). Definitely try it by booting off the CD/USB in Live mode first, just to see if you like it and all that stuff. Windows drivers won't generally work in Ubuntu/Lubuntu anyway.

I run Diablo II in Wine on my netbook and it runs fine. Direct3D mode doesn't want to work for some reason though, but I haven't really got much of a need for that. Wine is a bit of a bitch with fonts on really small screens though, but I found a fix for that somewhere. If you run into a font problem just let me know and I'll hunt it down for you again.

Yeah... I just spent the better part of a month customizing 10.04. I'm not in a hurry to upgrade.

Ubuntu 11.04 kind of sucks.

I switched my netbook over to Fuduntu. Muuuuuch faster... and actually based on Fedora, which I didn't know until I installed it and found that some things are a bit different. Totally worth the adaptation, IMO, especially for a slow PC.

Does it run alright? Do you like it? I've been running arch linux and freeBSD for a while now and haven't used Ubuntu or gnome or whatever Ubuntu's new front end is in a while.
