RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

EFO Discussion Thread. (V2)

Activist Group Original Thread:

I removed the poll. The Education Freedom Organization, or EFO, by popular vote, is now the official name of this organization. So instead of calling it "The organization" we can call it EFO now. Fucking finally.

We have also officially decided that edfreedom.org will be the location of the website for EFO... Now it's onto construction.

GO TO THE LAST PAGE OF THIS THREAD TO VIEW THE CURRENT DISCUSSION, EVERYTHING LEADING UP TO THAT IS HISTORY; THIS OPENING POST, HOWEVER, IS DYNAMIC, AND I WILL UPDATE IT AS THINGS PROGRESS.

Well I dunno, because EFO is alot like UFO, but sure I like it.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

I don't think that will pose that big of a problem, really... Now, as for the URL:

EFO.com, EFO.org, and EFO.net are all taken. edfreedom.org isn't though. I'm thinking we're going to want .org at the end, seeing as how we're an organization and all. What do you think?

edfreedom sounds good, and it's more informative than EFO for people who don't know what the letters stand for.. so i think it's perfect

I'm so sick of all these people but I'm scared to be alone...

Maybe the YLF (Youth Liberation Front)?

That sounds pretty cool, but pretty much everyone decided on EFO...

What does everyone think about YLF? I think it sounds like it encompasses all youth rights, instead of just education reform / recreation.

On another note:

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

Re: I propose the creation of an anti-school activist group - V2

Bumpity bump... So we're still stuck on the name? I think 'EFO' is fine if this is a school reform group. However, a giant liberation of youth in general has its appeal. It's a matter of how endeavourous we are. Are we going to be "all or nothing" or realistic and pace ourselves? I'm fine either way, but I think most of you would pick the latter, since that was how this idea got started: simply changing schools.

Regardless, fixing schools is the first step in liberating youth, so it doesn't matter what name we pick. 'EFO' makes more sense, while 'YLF' would attract more people. Let's just move on from the name by the start of June. Next step would be... a site, right? How's that going?

Know what?

I've got a piece of good hosting available till October -- and renewable thereafter for like 10 bucks a month, which is highly manageable. And a domain is only about 10 dollars a year.

Provided the police doesn't come visiting with barbarous intentions, I could let you use the host. It's not like it'll hog a lot of resources or anything. And you'd get a free site design with it.

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Re: I propose the creation of an anti-school activist group - V2

The whole thing with YLF is that it would be working towards virtually the same goals as NYRA... We don't need 2 competing youth rights agencies to split the group, what we need is a group focusing on school that is also compatible and friendly with NYRA which is the general youth-rights group...

That's what I'm thinking. And faby, that'd be pretty cool. If we go with EFO, would it be like "edfreedom.org" or something? Don't do anything yet, though, till we are definite on the name.

Maybe student liberation front? Or something... EFO's alright for me though. Actually, student liberation front sounds kind of sexy... lol

I'm pretty indifferent, as I feel like all of the suggested names are fitting and sound good. I went ahead and chose Educational Freedom Organization, after some consideration. I cast my vote for it in the poll, also... so, yea. I'm in! Biggrin

My 2cents - Our name doesn't matter nearly as much as our actions. The current poll has 80% of the votes toward the EFO. Why not just go with that?

While the name may not matter to us, who have already subscribed to the ideas, it will matter a lot while we are trying to recruit new activist to help fight. I feel that it is absolutely essential that the name be appealing and be able to attract as many students as possible.

Thinking from that perspective, I believe that for the most part, students tend to think education = school, and they don't like school. I like Youth Liberation Front, but I'm worried about how we'd be perceived considering we focus on school, and not as much on other issues like NYRA.

Agreed. YLF makes us sound like a youth rights group moreso than a anti-school group, which isn't all bad, but NYRA already exist and all of that.

Front seems sort of militant, in a way, which is kind of why it's appealing... I guess it could scare people away as well. ELF, for now, gets my vote but any one of them are decent, I think.

So yeah, pro's and cons. What do you think?

Yea, I can see the "front" thing being an issue. Like I've said, the name doesn't matter so much to me, but my opinions are here anyway. I say if we don't get a solid response within the next couple of days, we go with the poll results.

Fuck it, the poll isn't really an accurate show of votes since the other options weren't originally up there, but if people aren't going to revote, or already have revoted and aren't speaking up, we'll just have to go with EFO. Fine by me. I say, we hold a meeting, make it final, and discuss and put up the website within the next week or two.
