RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Jobs
Hello everyone. Newbie here. I'm so glad I found this site. I didn't know so many people felt as strongly about school as I do. It's comforting. Anyway, although there are many great alternatives I am regretfully stuck in school at least until I graduate high school. I can't stand the thought of it but I only have 2 more years so I'll deal. I absolutely do not want to go to college. I go to a school with a 100% college bound rate (or so they say) so it has been instilled in me that if I don't go to college I will have no future. I find this statement highly unlikely. Can anyone tell me some good jobs that only require a high school diploma?

Re: Jobs
I guess that's true. I'm just so scared. I've been told all my life that college is mandatory, that I can't have a good life without it. Breaking free is harder than it looks. Thank you for your reply.

Re: Jobs
Get inside your head and kick the ass of that brainwashing asshole they implanted inside you.
Anyway, I suggest getting some job experience before you leave school. And I mean some real experience, not the crap kids think is experience these days. Supermarkets and McDonalds... I tell ya.

Re: Jobs
Browse around gumtree.com. I don't know if there's a US equivalent, but there are tons of jobs there that don't require college, and some of them may be pretty interesting depending on what you like.

Look into the skilled trades. They're very lucrative especially in this economy. People are always going to need plumbers, electricians and HVAC technicians. Usually training on the job with a year or two of classroom instruction (if any) recommended. Then you get your licence and work on your own from there.
My step brother owns his own business doing escavation work and repairing septic tanks. It's worth over a $1 million. All he has is a high school diploma and an honorable discharge from the USMC.

Culinary
Mind you that you have to start out low and work your way up. My friend Scott started as dishwasher at age 16 and made his way up the line. He was sous chef at the resort for a while and recently got promoted. He is now Chef De Part-ay (I ave no idea how to spell it but its pronounce just like it looks) and as such is in charge of Bay Harbor Convention Center and makes about $75-100K a year depending on how booked they are. He is 23 drives a $30K car and owns his own house.

This has been a test of the emergency pointless argument system. Had this been a real pointless argument, someone would have been called a facist.

Re: Jobs
First, while I would rather not be in college right now, I must admit that it is infinitely better than primary and secondary school. That hardly says anything, of course. The point is that it won't be so bad if you go to college, especially as you'll get to be away from your parents.
Second, don't look for a job that doesn't require a college degree. Decide what you like doing, and then figure out how to make money doing it. This may involve inventing a job. If you run your own business in some form, people generally don't care about academic certifications.
Third, you don't necessarily have to be working whenever you're not in school; you spend money to attend school, and you work to make money, so you could also spend just a little of money to live and still spend a lot less than you do on school. A college tuition spent on better things would easily sustain you for 10 years if you managed it properly, so you don't have to start working right away.

Re: Jobs
There are also ways to find work aside from applying to traditional jobs. It's not always easy but if you have some skills, or just want to start out as an assistant, you can do things for individuals in exchange for money -- help with computers, errands, office work, cleaning, babysitting, renovation projects, painting, yard work, moving, etc. You'll rarely see stuff like that posted anywhere -- it takes getting to know people where you live or maybe doing some advertising. And if you find one or a few people to work regularly for, it could add up.
Most of those things won't pay super-well, but it could be better than a fast food job... especially for starting out. And who knows, if you demonstrate your work ethic in those capacities people could help you find jobs where they work or with other people they know. Also you might have a more flexible schedule for pursuing your interests or doing higher-paying work.
There are also a lot of freelance jobs you can do with the right skills... video editing, 3D modeling, web sites, graphic design, programming, and many other things. The key for this work is to develop a portfolio and shop it around -- clients care what you can do, not what degree you have. The catch is that it takes a lot of learning to get good at these high-paying skills.
