RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Hello, I am a human being
Hi
I'm just an average human being who despises the so called "edukayshun" system. I am writing this on a mobile device to avoid detection from my extremely pro-school parents, (who recently upgraded to the nefariously spyware ridden windows 10.) I enjoy playing video games, indulging myself in bullshit news sites, (to laugh at them,) and most of my time is spent reading books. But my favorite activity is being free from the hell of school. Luckily there was a fire a few days ago at school, and Christmas break will be extended!
My parents like to limit my use of electronics, and claim they cause retinal damage, so I will mostly be lurking as posting takes time and might result in parental anger if I cannot close the page fast enough. Nonetheless I will try to post as much as my grade obsessed parents let me.
Also, do any of you know how to bypass the parental controls of windows 10? The interface and general usage is shittier than a school latrine and their is syware laced everywhere, (aka "weekly reports".) I have already snuck on my parent's admin account and changed my account into an admin account as well. But their is no changes in the time limit, nor did making my own account admin grant me power to the parental controls. I have tried searching up "how to bypass or change parental controls" with nothing but websites advocating "child safety" popping up.
Any advice or pointers across this site are welcome ,thx
Btw: what does the "warning level" beside my name mean?

Hello, I am a human being
Hello and welcome!
Windows 10 is shit, and most of my intelligent friends don't even want to use it. I'm surprised and disappointed that so many people think it's "totally fine", though.
Since I don't use it myself and probably never will, I have no idea how to bypass its bullshit. But one of our members did figure out a few things about it over here a while back.
General conclusion:
Quote:it looks like the easiest/safest way 'around' Windows 10's bullshit is to just boot from a Linux USB
Quote:If you post stuff that SoulRiser doesn't like, then your warning level increases. And if your warning level gets high enough, you get banned.
Actually, I don't even use the warning system anymore.

I can easily avoid the spahware by using other devices to access sites. But usage on the ipad is very limited and a significant amount slower. The real problem lies within the time limit, where I can only access the computer for 1 hour and a half per day, and how the computer ceases to allow my access at 3:00 pm.
Thx for the link and advice btw, although it did not help with disabling the snoopware it is good to be informed.

- Don't log in with your Microsoft account (so it can't e-mail your parents)
- Install Spybot Anti-Beacon (it blocks the surveillance stuff and full-time update seeding)
That'll make Windows 10 just as okay as 7 and 8.
Anyway INSTALL LINUX if possible.

Cool, didn't know about that. Does it disable the child account spying though? Would a child account even be able to run this?

Well, without a Microsoft account login it has no way to know what the e-mail address of your parents is.

Ah, no, not that. Child account = you're going to be tracked no matter what. But setting up a child account is similar to installing a nannyware program. Unlike the e-mails, it must be set up manually in the Control Panel.

Im pretty sure the spyware only applies to child accounts, leaving adult accounts uneffected. I do have instances where my parents forget to log out of their accounts, prompting me to set my account to admin (as mentioned on my first post.) But as I dug deeper into their account, I found out you need a microsoft account and its password to access the child account. So i've pretty much given up on setting my accounts to adult :(

Sorry, if I don't know much about computers (Most of my time is spent wasted on youtube.) But is does linux show differenty on the deskop interface and taskbar than windows 10? Or is it just a configuration that allows me to disable parental controls? (And other types of fuckware) If my parents notice something different than the usual piss 'n' shit windows 10, then Linux will obviously be unistalled...

RE: Hello, I am a human being
Linux is a complete alternative to Windows.
You can completely replace Windows with it (what if you tell your parents it's the next update?) or install it on a partition besides Windows, but that's probably not be a good idea in your situation.
What seems like a good idea to me for you, is creating a Linux USB drive. You turn the computer off, put the stick in, turn it on, and then it will start up Linux instead of Windows! Turn the computer off again, take the stick out, and the computer will be like nothing happened. It's the perfect way to get around the malware known as Windows, without anyone noticing!
Slax is a version of Linux that can be used on a USB drive.
http://www.slax.org/
Look at the Documentation page for installation instructions. You'll need an empty USB stick that's large enough for Linux itself, the applications you want to use, and the files you have.
You can only use applications that support Linux. There's a little app store with free software built in.

Hello, traveler.
This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.
Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"
Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.
People are allowed to change their views.
Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.
If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Not true, every game that runs on Windows can also run on Linux. The developer needs to feel like supporting it though.

My parents may not be the brightest bulbs in the room. But they have the bare minimum of brain cells required to understand that Linux is NOT a Windows update. They don't know it has the ability to bypass right-restricting controls. But they know it isn't an update from Windows. I also play games like league of legends on my computer, so I don't know the what the consequences for installing linux will be :(

Try the USB-stick method then. Programs that aren't for Linux can often still be used through WINE, a compatibility layer.

Thx, but how much space do I need on my USB stick? How long does it take to download? I only have 1 hour and 30 mins a day. And what is WINE? And one last thing, how do you disable parental controls with Linux? Or is it automatically disabled? Sorry, im a pretty big computer noob...

Hello, I am a human being
8GB is enough USB space for most Linuxes. They're usually around 700MB - 1GB to download. How long that'll take to download depends entirely on your internet connection.
WINE is a thing you install on Linux that lets you run most Windows programs.
You don't disable the parental controls with Linux - it's an entirely different operating system that completely ignores Windows and it's parent controls.

WINE is a thing you install on Linux that lets you run most Windows programs.
You don't disable the parental controls with Linux - it's an entirely different operating system that completely ignores Windows and it's parent controls.
Their are more than one Linuxes? O.O

There are lots of versions of Linux (anybody with the right knowledge can create their own version) but only a few are good. Slax is the best version for USB use.

Aka Distros(or distributions). I believe Linux is basically the core component which others use to build an operating system around, the similarity of using the same core being what makes them all "Linux" though every distro will differ based on who made it and for what purpose(genenral use, business, hacking, etc)

Well, thats quite a lot of shit it takes to downloading Linux(es.) are there any other ways to bypass the parental controls other than Linux?
