RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

How do schools spy on you?

Okay, how do schools spy on you? I was thinking we should make a list, like a directory, of every school we go to (or have been to) and how they use technology to spy on students. I hear some teachers turn on bluetooth. Some remotely monitor and confiscate laptops. Some use software to log keystrokes. Some enable webcams remotely (some teachers have been arrested). Some ban free time and any 'non-school' related reading. But how do they do it?

I'll start this off with technology that Universities use to detect cheating. They use a device called the Phonehound, or Pockethound. They walk around the room and it detects any smartphones that are turned on. It detects transmissions.

What technologies and/or techniques does your school use to spy on you?

How do schools spy on you?

I'm not to quite sure on what they spy or creep onto me, whenever I do something. But I guess it's physical surveillance with the teachers are every corner to get me to go to class whether I like it or not. And my behavior and my actions are watched by two teachers when there is only a few students. In fact this so so called therapeutic school that is go to is actually in fact more thwarting and authoritative, since you can't get away with cutting classes at a school with perhaps 3000 kids clumped in together. Taking away my rights and isolating me, for refusing to comply with the rules, which do the work that you are told of, wether you like it or not you must be do your work or else you lose your "privellage" to talk to other people or we give you a extrinsic reward of dunkin donuts on Friday if you do all of your work of course, or special Chinese takeout lunch on Fridays for behavior. They don't use technology, they use people.

RE: How do schools spy on you?

I hear my school has a history of every place a student has gone to under their student id and all the stuff they did on the school computer and their internet.

Not really spying though.

My school has a monitoring service where they can see our browsing history on their Wi-Fi or any school-related services. I also avoid using the Wi-Fi or school services when possible (that means slower speed on my phone, but at least i'm not being stalked by Granville Schools.).

RE: How do schools spy on you?

I think all of that (physical watching, wifi monitoring, logs) is surveillance. I can understand the need for it, but it seems overboard. A good set of system logs should do the same work without being too obtrusive, and any good server generates system logs.

I forgot something...

A group of Stanford University students used the freedom of information act to request their admission records. They created the Fountain Hopper website to help other students.

One student said they sent him hundreds of pages of records, including every time he opened a door using his student ID.

I just think that's creepy. I understand the security need, but every book you check out, every door you open, every time you drive your car, recorded in records you can't see.

I believe I mentioned somewhere before. School teachers used bluetooth on phones to find phones with bluetooth on. I think this was before bluetooth was like auto-hide or something.

RE: How do schools spy on you?

To know *who* is doing something on wi-fi, a login could be monitored if implemented. So - if you have a user id and password, then yes - they are having the ability to show that *you* did something. Unless you steal someone else's login... which I guess I think is just bad karma....

If your school provides a guest wi-fi, ultimately all tracing must use a MAC Address to prove that something happened. It would be generally recommended to spoof your MAC address to avoid surveillance. For instance:

http://www.gohacking.com/spoof-mac-addre...id-phones/

Granted - I don't necessarily think that using public resources for bad things is a good idea - so maybe just using it to get on School Survival is a good idea. So, that is my general disclaimer - if it is illegal for you to access, don't do it anyway, if your school is just a butthole and blocked an innocuous site - spoof away.

Sure you would also get an IP, but they would primarily use a MAC address to trace that anyway - I am sure that most Guest networks are DHCP. The idea would be - if you think you will get caught - is to unspoof the MAC and power down the phone ASAP. Also, don't save your history - that should be obvious.

Do yourself a favor though - don't use your precious data if your parents only give you a small plan... it doesn't help your arguments against school if you have huge data overages!!!

How do schools spy on you?

Where I am if you get any kind of social assistance or welfare the school knows more about you than you can possibly imagine. Case reports, family info and other personal info. All things that should be private are made public to school counselors, admin and even teachers under the guise of "best interests of the student" and supposed abuse prevention.

How do schools spy on you?

Now days schools are using advance technologies .. school parent communication mobile apps. Main aim of these apps is to tell all the things about parents regarding the school student. Smart Way of using the technology, everything is available on this app but only parents access to attendance, teacher communicate bi-directional message with parent, grades, behavior of student, online school fees payment and many more.

I don't know for certain, but I'm pretty sure my school spys the Wi-Fi connection. Thankfully my ISP made a free Wi-Fi hotspot that I can connect to instead of being on my school's Wi-Fi network while being spyed on.

How do schools spy on you?

My school has cameras all around the school, has about four SRO's, tracks anything you do on their computers (You have a Unique Student ID, that you use to log into your county account, which tracks anything you do and all your files...), and also their wifi more than likely (although something interesting is that most students use VPN's on their phones anyway). They also may install something onto student laptops that allows them to track them on their Wifi....(yes there is a second wifi ("secure"-wifi that requires a Student ID to use)), and they have to use a program on your computer to allow it to connect to the Wifi (probably windows only...I would love for a student to bring in a Laptop with a linux distro and be turned down due to it running linux Razz)

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Twitter: It's likely by finding the accounts of students and seeing their tweets OR following the students. That's why I blocked my school's Twitter from seeing my tweets.

My school has security cameras, and it uses this absolute bullshit on the computers called RM Tutor 5 which lets the teacher or IT technician take over the mouse on anyone's computer. And yes, before you ask, it has happened to me - for looking at coffee tables.

Airplane mode will fix that. Make sure that Wi-Fi is off.
Because some phones will not turn off wifi if airplane mode is on (You might have to do it manually)

My school uses something called LanSchool (Most members of School Survival may be familiar with it)
The teacher can:
Show Screen - Locks out keyboard and mouse forcing you to watch the teachers screen (You can hold down the power button and could get in deep shit for disrupting the class. As my school calls it impeding the education of others.)
Blank Screen - Does the obvious, Throws a Blue Screen of Death like pop up on your screen and lock your mouse and keyboard out.
Limit Web - Blocks websites (my teacher rarely uses that)
Send message:
Say something like "Get to work"
My word processing teacher does this.

And my school has a network called "SS-Personal" you have to be "Sponsored" by a teacher to use it, WTF?

Heard of it but I've only dealt with it once. I had a substitute (the substitute was the "dean of students") in art class who tried messing with LanSchool. I think he wanted to roll it out more but fortunately it didn't happen (this happened last year).

RE: How do schools spy on you?

Only my Pastoral Leader spies on me and does it only, so that she has something to punish me for, mostly for something stupid. She spies on me by making teachers tell her about everything I do. And they only tell her because they're scared of her, at least I think they are. Not only that, but she also bans me from having secrets. She treats me like I don't know what. Well, at least other teachers don't spy on me.
