RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Oklahoma ditches common core

I'm going to post multiple articles of the same topic (due to lack of knowledge about the bias of these sites)

http://americansforprosperity.org/legisl...ommon-core

http://www.slj.com/2014/06/standards/com...mmon-core/

http://tucson.com/ap/national/oklahoma-d...0a415.html

I will just say these things:
I hope this will spread around to the other states, (especially to a high pop state like CA, TX or NY)

The dept. of education needs to be abolished

No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top need to be abolished. (I'm glad my state hasn't accepted race to the top)

Wake up people, and look at life around you

No Child Left Behind Part II.

In short, it was a monetary reward offered by the federal government to states that complied to their draconian education measures and ridiculous performance standards, and announced by none other than Fearless Leader Barack Obama.

Wat.

I misread as Obama.

I support State's Rights when it comes to education. Federal govt just better cough up the cash, and make sure state isn't using education money for campaigning, roads or some other non-educational crap. Let the residents of a state decide on their state assembly, and thus decide how they want the education system handled.

We don't need the aliens from Planet D.C telling us how to teach kids.

RE: Oklahoma ditches common core

The education industry claims to be responsible for the learning children do. They make a tremendous amount of money for it.

Performance standards are an attempt to measure what is being claimed. What the education industry fears is that their fraud will be exposed.

Basically bright children learn more and dim ones learn less. It really has nothing to do with the teacher. Since teachers claim credit for what children do, some tax payers occasionally tell them to prove it with things like performance standards.

Teachers hate this more than students because they know their fraud will be exposed. They worry that they will get a class of dim children and the test results will be lower. Since they claim credit for teaching, it really should not depend on the type of students they get.

It is an irony of the teaching profession that if a student learns the teacher gets the credit and if a student fails it is the student that is a failure.

Give more money to teachers and do not ask for results - Democrats
We will give more money but we want measurable results - Republicans
If you want good performance, pay the students and not the teachers - A yet unnamed political party

This will never happen on full scale. Given the large number of students each and every year, we'll deplete our budget, and very quickly.

I do remember though around the mid 20th century of programs that did assist older students and did pay them (part of FDR's reforms).... wonder if we could lobby something like that. Then again, given the budget, I highly doubt it would be conceivable.
